Makoto Shinkai‘s highly anticipated film gets a special screening in the UK ahead of its release.

After its tremendous success at the Japanese box office, Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume will arrive in cinemas in April internationally. But before that, the film will screen in Competition at the 2023 Berlinale. Moreover, today Crunchyroll in collaboration with Sony Pictures announced that there will be a special UK screening on March 1st ahead of its release on April 14. This will take place in London at the BFI Southbank. And, Director Makoto Shinkai himself will be in attendance.

Award-winning creator, writer and director Makoto Shinkai has been a visionary in the animation space for decades, with his most recent films being Your Name. (2016) and Weathering With You (2019), both of which have catapulted him as a leading animation auteur with international viewers.  Weathering With You was selected as Japan’s entry for the best international feature film category of the 2020 Academy Awards and nominated in four categories in the 47th annual Annie Awards including Best Animated Independent Feature.

Tickets for the special screening go on general sale at 16:00 tomorrow at the link HERE, with BFI Champions & Patrons, and Members getting early access from 11:30am and 12:30pm respectively. Tickets cost £18 for adults and £14 for concessions with BFI Membership gaining an exclusive discount on those prices.

Suzume will release around the world in April. Crunchyroll is handling the release and has teamed up with Sony Pictures Entertainment, Wild Bunch International and Eurozoom.

  • April 13 in Australia, Brazil, Germany, Mexico and New Zealand
  • April 14 in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Gibraltar, Ireland, Luxembourg, United Kingdom and United States

More dates will be announced for Latin America and EMEA territories.
