Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Series Officially Announced at Paramount+

Dust off your finest Starfleet uniforms because Star Trek: Starfleet Academy enters into production in 2024

Calling all cadets, Starfleet Academy is now taking admissions. Paramount+ has finally announced the long-rumored new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The series will “follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy.” The show is planned to go into production in 2024.

Alex Kurtzman has made it no secret that a series based on the legendary training ground for all Starfleet graduates was in the pipeline. But until now, the series has barely made it past the subspace rumor mill. Thankfully, today’s reveal goes even further and gives us a taste of what we might expect to see when the series finally debuts on Paramount+. Kurtzman will be co-showrunner alongside Noga Landau (creator of CW’s Nancy Drew). Together they have made the following announcement:

“Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves. The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today! Ex Astris, Scientia!”

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Reveal

Alongside Kurtzman and Landau, Starfleet Academy will be executive produced by Gaia Violo (creator of the Prime Video thriller Absentia). Also executive producing are Aaron Baiers, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber. The new series will be produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

“We are excited to introduce ‘Star Trek’ fans to a whole new generation of Starfleet officers in training as they navigate the rigors of the Academy and the brink of adulthood in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” said Domenic DiMeglio, chief marketing officer and head of data at Paramount Streaming in a statement. “Introducing new characters and compelling storylines, this all-new original series will serve as a fantastic addition to the franchise and Paramount+, bringing new generations of viewers and long-term ‘Star Trek’ fans alike together to enjoy the next chapter in the iconic ‘Star Trek’ universe.”

“As we continue to explore more of the ‘Star Trek’ universe, we’re thrilled to bring Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to fans around the world as the next chapter in this expanding franchise,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios. “Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau’s vision is a smart and thrilling take that celebrates the core principles of what ‘Star Trek’ has always stood for, but through the eyes of the next generation of Starfleet’s leaders.”

Paramount Plus Expands Its Star Trek Offerings

Sadly, as of press time, details about these series are a closely guarded secret. Only known by the highest members of the Federation Council. However, the description of the academy being reopened “for the first time in over a century,” fits with the show being set in the 32nd century after the climax of Star Trek: Discovery‘s final season. During the earlier season, it was revealed that Starfleet Academy has been mothballed due to “The Burn.” In fact, no admissions had been accepted in over 125 years. But that all changed in the 32nd Century thanks to the crew of the Discovery. A fact that was underlined when Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) vacated her role aboard the Federation flagship for a position at the brand-new Academy.

Tilly is returning for the fifth and final season of Discovery, so it stands within reason to assume that her role in the newly minted Starfleet Academy will feature. But will Tilly’s former crewmates have a role in the new series? That remains to be seen. however, with the Discovery set to defend the galaxy one final time, who knows which crewmembers will make out unscathed?

Either way, all will be revealed when Star Trek: Starfleet Academy opens its doors sometime in the near future. The series will enter production sometime in 2024 so expect it to launch on Paramount+ in 2025. If you haven’t already, subscribe to the service here and boldly go where no one has gone before…
