Three New Star Wars Movies Announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed new Star Wars films from James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

The big news just keeps on coming from Star Wars: Celebration. Just minutes after Lucasfilm unveiled the first trailer for Star Wars: Ahsoka, studio president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed three new Star Wars movies. And boy, do they span almost every timeline the galaxy far, far away has ever explored. Helming the movies are James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Dave Filoni (The Mandalorian, Ahsoka), and Academy Award- and Emmy Award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel, Saving Face).

Three New Star Wars Movies Announced at SWCE

A TRIO OF ADVENTURES

James Mangold’s movie will go back to the dawn of the Jedi and will tell the story of the very first Jedi Knight to wield the Force.

Dave Filoni’s movie, which will incidentally be executive produced by Jon Favreau will focus on the New Republic. The multi-faceted adventure will close out the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney+ series.

And finally, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s film will be set after the events of Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker and will feature the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey. The story will follow Rey Skywalker as she builds a new Jedi Order and defends it from a new rising threat.

“As you can see by all the television we’ve been doing, we’re exploring a lot of different storylines. This really spawns from what George Lucas said years ago, that he created Star Wars to move forward and backward along a mythological timeline,” Kennedy said. “Now we’re looking to broaden that timeline, building a rich future, expanding upon the present, going deep into the past to tell our stories, and we’re thrilled to be working with some of the best and most passionate filmmakers on projects that will span the past, the present, and the future.”

RELEASE

Those fortunate enough to be seated in either of the three stages were rewarded with an appearance from all three directors. As well as Daisy Ridley herself. And the actor was more than happy to share her excitement about the project. All the while, Dave Filoni shared his love for the fans. And his devotion to delivering the best Star Wars movie he can. It was an emotional speech. One that only secured his admiration from the fanbase. And those in attendance returned his affection with a standing ovation.

Sadly, these new projects haven’t yet received release dates. Although it has been suggested that Daisy Ridley’s “New Jedi Order” movie is all but ready to commence filming. So fans can look forward to reuniting with Rey sooner rather than later.
