Beyond Utopia, The winner of the Sundance US Documentary Audience Award will be released in UK cinemas on October 27th.

The London-based, documentary film company, Dogwoof, is thrilled to announce BEYOND UTOPIA. The illuminating must-see documentary from Madeleine Gavin (City of Joy) which uses hidden camera footage to track the perilous, high-stake journey that North Korean defectors undertake to escape oppression, is releasing to UK cinemas on 27th October 2022. The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year where it received the US Documentary Audience Award.

A suspenseful look at the lengths people will go to gain freedom, BEYOND UTOPIA follows various individuals as they attempt to flee one of the most oppressive places on Earth, a land they grew up believing was a paradise. The heart of the movie centres around a mother who longs to be reunited with the child she was compelled to abandon, a family of five, which includes young children and an elderly grandmother, embarking on a perilous expedition into the unfriendly mountains beyond their border, and a religious man with a mission to aid these distressed individuals.

Gripping, visceral, and urgent, BEYOND UTOPIA embeds the viewer with these family members as they attempt their perilous escape, palpably conveying life-or-death stakes. The film has been hailed as “An astonishing real-life geopolitical thriller” – The Hollywood Reporter. “Enthralling… an extraordinary vision” – Harper’s Bazaar, and 4-stars – Common Ground “Beyond incredible” – Deadline.
