The first teaser trailer for Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and The Heron is finally here!

The Boy and The Heron (君たちはどう生きるか (Kimitachi wa Dō Ikiru ka)) is Studio Ghibli’s newest film. It is also considered to be Hayao Miyazaki’s last film. It was released in Japan on July 14th with no promotion except a single poster featuring a drawing of the heron. Studio Ghibli intentionally decided not to reveal any stills, trailers, synopsis or casting details prior its release. It grossed an impressive 7.7 billion yen (around $52.6 million) at the Japanese box office and after two months in cinemas, it’s still in the top 10!

However, GKIDS who is handling the US release has decided to do things very differently. Indeed, yesterday they have unveiled the first teaser trailer. For fans who wish to experience the film like Japanese audiences without knowing anything about it, you can stop here. For the others, you can watch the teaser below:

The Boy and The Heron is set to be released in US cinemas including IMAX on December 8. There will be special preview engagements on November 22. The film will have its international premiere on September 7th at the Toronto Festival Film, followed by a premiere in London on October 8th at the BFI London Film Festival.

Other international release dates include November 1 for France, October 6 for Taiwan and January 1 for Italy.

Official synopsis:

A young boy named Mahito yearning for his mother ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning. A semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death, and creation, in tribute to friendship, from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki.
