STORY
The Family Plan follows Dan Morgan (Mark Wahlberg) as he is enjoying his quiet suburban life with his wife Jessica (Michelle Monaghan) and his three children. However, everything goes wrong when his past catches up. In fact, decades earlier, he was a government assassin tasked with eliminating the world’s deadliest threats. People from his past are now trying to kill him. In order to escape them, he decides to take off on an impromptu cross-country road trip to Las Vegas with his unsuspecting wife, angsty teen daughter Nina (Zoe Colletti), pro-gamer son (Van Crosby) and 10-month-old baby.
This film is a comedy that can be enjoyed by the entire family and with the Christmas holidays coming in, this may be the perfect time to watch it or with your favourite group of friends. Indeed, it is a lot of fun. It is especially funny as Dan is trying to escape from his enemies all the while his family doesn’t know the truth about him. There are several moments that made me laugh out loud. It is your usual American comedy that will make you have a good time. At times, it plays like a road trip film as the characters are going to Las Vegas using a minivan with some family time. And at others, it goes full on action. There is never a dull moment.
Moreover, this film comes with some very predictable twists. However, having a good time with an action comedy is the most important part and that’s exactly what it does. So we can excuse the twists.
CAST
Furthermore, Mark Wahlberg excels at action comedies, he’s done films like this several times. I know that I generally won’t be disappointed by his comedies. And this time is no exception. He has a way of delivering lines that really works for comedies. Indeed, he knows how to bring out the laughs. Playing dads is also something he is really good at. Obviously, he is also great at action. Michelle Monaghan is also someone who is good at comedy. Pairing her up with Wahlberg was a smart idea. The two have a great on-screen chemistry. It’s a duo I would love to see working together again. On top of that, Maggie Q doesn’t have a lot of screen time but she’s there, she is having fun. But, the real scene stealer is the adorable baby!
VISUALS & SOUNDTRACK
The action scenes are absolutely thrilling. You can tell a lot of work has been put in the choreography of these scenes with the stunt team. The director Simon Cellan Jones has done a brilliant work filming them too. There is one scene at the supermarket that involves the baby and this one might be my favourite scene of the film. It is at the same time a great moment of comedy and an intense action scene.
Finally, the film uses a mix of songs that have been used over and over again in films but it’s just as good to hear them again.
VERDICT
The Family Plan is a fun action comedy. At times, it plays like a road trip film and at others, it goes full on action. There is never a dull moment. Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan are a great on-screen couple with a good dynamic. But, the real scene stealer is the adorable baby!
