Godzilla Minus One (C)2023 TOHO CO., LTD.
Godzilla Minus One stands strong at the US box office for its third week!
After a tremendous success during its first two weeks, making history at the US box office, Godzilla Minus One started its third weekend by expanding for a second time from 2.540 to 2622 cinemas. This is thanks to the excellent response surrounding the film. Despite competition with Wonka, Godzilla Minus One has continued to shine at the box office. It only dropped by 41.3% from last week grossing $5 million (higher than the estimated $4.9 million). This is an incredible hold. It finished the weekend at the fourth place.
After becoming the highest grossing Japanese live-action film of all time in the US, the film is now the fifth highest grossing Japanese film of all time in the US (this includes anime). It is expected to surpass more popular anime works and rank even higher. As of today, its cumulative gross stands at $34.2 million, surpassing the Japanese gross of the film which stands at $28.6 million. Even though the release scale is different, this is something you don’t see everyday, it speaks volume about how well the film has been received in the US. This is quite an achievement for a subtitled film. The worldwide gross stands at an impressive $64 million.

THOUGHTS
In our FIVE-STAR review, Thomas said:
Godzilla Minus One is an epic film with breathtaking visuals and a wonderful soundtrack. It is truly one of the best films of the year. At its heart, it is a deeply moving postwar drama that tells a character-driven story. Ryunosuke Kamiki delivers a powerful and heartfelt performance as the lead. He is also supported by a great cast.

The worst despair in the series’ history strikes Japan! After the war, Japan has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state. The most desperate situation in the history of Japan. Who? And how? Will Japan stand up to it?
It stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Sakura Andor, Hidetaka Yoshioka and Munetaka Aoki. The film was directed and written by Takashi Yamazaki (Lupin III: The First) who also supervised the visual effects.
