Godzilla Minus One will get a black-and-white edition release in Japan on January 12!

Yesterday, Toho teased a big upcoming announcement about Godzilla Minus One and today, they revealed the film will get a black-and-white edition. It will be released on January 12 in 340 cinemas across Japan. This version is titled Godzilla Minus One / Minus Color (Godzilla -1.0/C). The colored version will also continue to play in cinemas. After seven weeks in Japanese cinemas, the film is still in the top 5 at the box office. It has earned over 4.42 billion yen (more than $28.17 million) on 2.87 million admissions. The worldwide gross currently stands at $64.25 million.

The director Takashi Yamazaki has released a statement concerning this new version of the film:

Godzilla Minus One / Minus Color, which has been in the works for a long time, will finally release. The team did not just make the film monochrome, but coordinated it shot-by-shot, making full use of various mats, as if they were creating a new film. The goal was to create an image tone as if taken by the masters of black-and-white photography. I asked them to unearth as much skin texture and landscape detail as possible, which were latent in the captured data. Then, Godzilla appeared, as terrifying and horrifying as in a documentary. A new sense of reality that looms over you by losing colors. Please come to the theater and live and resist the further horror.

A new poster and trailer have been released with the tagline “Live and Resist in a monochrome world.”

Moreover, 2024 will officially mark the 70th anniversary of the Godzilla franchise. From January 12, to commemorate this special milestone, Japanese cinemas will distribute a B5 original art board to fans who see Godzilla Minus One or Godzilla Minus One / Minus Color. This art board features the Japanese visuals on one side and the American visuals on the other side. This is limited to 300,000 people and quantities are limited depending on the cinema. The offer will end as soon as quantities run out.

THOUGHTS

In our FIVE-STAR review, Thomas said:

Godzilla Minus One is an epic film with breathtaking visuals and a wonderful soundtrack. It is truly one of the best films of the year. At its heart, it is a deeply moving postwar drama that tells a character-driven story. Ryunosuke Kamiki delivers a powerful and heartfelt performance as the lead. He is also supported by a great cast.

ABOUT GODZILLA MINUS ONE:

The worst despair in the series’ history strikes Japan! After the war, Japan has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state. The most desperate situation in the history of Japan. Who? And how? Will Japan stand up to it?

It stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Sakura Andor, Hidetaka Yoshioka and Munetaka Aoki. The film was directed and written by Takashi Yamazaki (Lupin III: The First) who also supervised the visual effects.
