Quickfire Reviews | 'What If...Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?'

Annlyel detours into Marvel’s What If Multiverse to present her quickfire review of WHAT IF…CAPTAIN CARTER FOUGHT THE HYDRA STOMPER?

One of the brilliant creative decisions in the first season of WHAT IF…? was to imagine Peggy Carter as the world’s first super soldier. The result was Captain Carter, one of the greatest heroines that has been realized in the MCU. Having her return in this season was not only an exciting choice, but the story they gave her was far more interesting than I anticipated.

Instead of simply rehashing the events of The Winter Soldier but swapping Captain Carter and Steve Rogers for Captain America and Bucky a.k.a The Winter Soldier, the story takes a delightful turn. Especially when incorporating elements of Black Widow into the mix to create an episode that lives up to the hype.

CAPTAIN CARTER RISES!

There are so many things I love about Captain Carter’s story. But one of the best elements is her friendship with Natasha Romanoff. In the movies, Natasha was often the sole woman in the stories. She never got the chance to truly interact with other female heroes and help save the day. With What If…?, we get to see a slightly different side to her in her relationship with Captain Carter. I love seeing them kicking butt together and saving the day. I’m glad we now have more female characters getting a chance to interact with one another in these stories.

Also, I can’t talk about this episode without acknowledging the delectable return of Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostakoff a.k.a the Iron Maiden. She ate this role up and now I need to see her as an antagonist in an upcoming MCU project because she was an absolute highlight in the episode.

VERDICT

All in all, as I’ve said again and again, this season of What If…? is better in every aspect compared to the first season and that truly is a gift.

Marvel’s What If…? is now streaming on Disney Plus with episodes released daily until December 30.
