Annlyel detours into Marvel’s What If Multiverse to present her quickfire review of WHAT IF…IRON MAN CRASHED INTO THE GRANDMASTER?
It’s been four years since Iron Man’s story came to a powerful conclusion after he sacrificed his life for the entire universe to stop Thanos. It was an epic moment that will go down as one of the greatest endeavors by any fictional hero. It solidified Iron Man as one of the greatest heroes of all time. Since then, we’ve been introduced to more fantastic characters like Shang-Chi, Ms. Marvel, Namor, Yelena Belova, etc. It wasn’t, however, until this particular episode of What If…? that I truly began to realize how much I missed (and loved) Iron Man.
STARK REALITY!
This episode was supposed to be part of the first season of What If…? but ended up in this second season because it needed a little more time to complete. It turns out, that was the best course of action because it ended up being one of the best episodes in the entire series. Additionally featuring Valkyrie, The Grandmaster, Korg, and Gamora, this episode starts wonderfully and never wavers. Iron Man gets to shine in imaginative ways that remind us why he’s truly one of the greatest superheroes of all time. The banter in this episode is witty and genuinely funny. The action setpieces are mind-blowing, and the character interactions, specifically between The Grandmaster and Iron Man, are perfect.
VERDICT
I found myself smiling from ear to ear watching the episode and when it concluded, there was no doubt that it was the best episode of the second season. This season, however, is far greater than the first season simply because the ideas are far more imaginative. Each episode truly feels like a surprise and that has been such a joy this holiday season.
Next up, What If…Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?
Marvel’s What If…? is now streaming on Disney Plus with episodes released daily until December 30.
