James Gunn Casts Milly Alcock as The DCU's New Supergirl

Milly Alcock has officially joined the new DCU as James Gunn’s Supergirl. The young House of the Dragon star is the latest addition to the newly minted DC Studios rebrand.

After weeks of speculation, Milly Alcock has officially been cast as James Gunn’s SUPERGIRL. The young House of the Dragon star had been expected to land the role after being shortlisted alongside Meg Donnelly. But now, James Gunn has found his Supergirl. And the character is now widely expected to make her debut in the upcoming SUPERMAN: LEGACY.

Although her involvement in David Corenswet’s Man of Steel relaunch is far from a certainty, the smart money is on her making an appearance before moving on to her own solo adventure SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW. The film is expected to begin shooting before the year is out. It should be noted that as of now, neither Gunn nor the studio has confirmed a director. Therefore, the deadline may be overly ambitious. But anything is possible in the DC Universe.

FROM THRONES TO KRYPTON

As per Variety, the Australian-born Alcock started her acting career as a teenager, before she was cast in her breakout role on the Game of Thrones prequel series where she played the younger Rhaenyra Targaryen. She won wide acclaim with critics for her performance as the striving Targaryen princess in the first five episodes of the show, before Emma D’Arcy took over the role as the show jumped forward in time 10 years.

JAMES GUNN

James Gunn confirmed the news on social media before the ink dried on the headlines. The director also confirmed that Alcock will bring Tom King, Bilquis Everly’s version of the character to life in the new DCU.

“Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk, @bilquis, and Ana Nogueira.“

RELEASE

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be based on the acclaimed comic book series by writers Tom King and Bilquis Evely. The story follows Kara, who seeks purpose in her life. Her fate changes when an alien girl seeks her and Crypto the Superdog’s help to avenge the villains who destroyed her world.

With Gunn deep into preparations for Superman: Legacy, it may be some time before we hear more about Kara’s debut. However, now that Alcock is in place, surely it’s only a matter of time before she speeds across the sky like a bird or a plane. As always, we’ll update the site once we hear more about this release. But in the meantime, get ready to welcome a new Supergirl into the DC family!
