Season 2 part 2 picks up where we left off in November. And as such, Nolan Grayson (J.K. Simmons) isn’t present a lot in these episodes as he is aboard a Viltrumite prison ship. These four episodes actually focus on Mark Grayson’s (Steven Yeun) return to Earth. This isn’t an easy return for him. He has been away for two months, life went on without him. So, he has to figure out how to balance his superhero life with his personal life at University and with his girlfriend Amber Bennett (Zazie Beetz). This is a tough emotional journey for him that culminates in a game-changing season finale. In fact, this second season is a turning point for Mark and it sets the stage for the upcoming third season.

Emotional struggle is an important theme of these episodes with Mark’s journey but also with Donald Ferguson (Christopher Diamantopoulos) who is on a quest to figure out the truth about himself. Overall, several of the characters are struggling in their own way. And this part of the season has them face their problems and for some accept their situation. I love how these episodes are action-packed but also anchored in emotional gravitas.

If you had forgotten Invincible reminds us why it is the best superhero TV series out there. It’s not just a great superhero story, it is genuinely a great story. It delivers big on the action side but it’s a story with a heart that gives focus on studying its character and developing them. Invincible has characters that you can identify with because they feel human. Despite their superpowers, they face similar problems that ordinary people would face. The human drama is an essential element of why this series works so well.

Furthermore, this series continues to have a star-studded voice cast. It’s impressive to see all the talented actors and actresses who were gathered for one series. These four episodes are big for Mark Grayson on an emotional level and Steven Yeun absolutely nails it. He delivers a powerful performance in which he highlights the vulnerability of his character.

VISUALS & SOUNDTRACK

Moreover, Invincible has great visuals using a common American animation style. It makes the best out of it by animating the scenes in a cinematic way. It doesn’t feel like watching a series , it feels like watching a film. Maybe, it also has to do with its runtime. Each episode is about 50-minute long. Actually, I wish more animated series could go beyond the 22-minute standard runtime. Besides, there is no lack of violence and blood in these new episodes. It really goes hard during the fight scenes.

As usual, John Paesano doesn’t disappoint with his music score. He is at his best during the more dramatic scenes. His music definitely adds to the atmosphere of the scenes and hits hard with the feels. This season also uses some songs as well. Each one is the right fit for the scene in which it’s used. In fact, there is an incredibly sweet montage scene featuring Amber and Mark and the song used here makes this scene perfect.

VERDICT

Invincible continues to be undeniably the best superhero TV series. The second part of season 2 delivers action-packed episodes anchored in emotional gravitas, leading to a game-changing season finale.
