After a successful first season and a spinoff series, Helluva Boss, Hazbin Hotel returns with its second season. Vivienne Medrano created it, starring Erika Henningsen, Stephanie Beatriz, Keith David, Kimiko Glenn, Christian Borle, and Alex Brightman. STORY

The first season had its set of flaws, but once you put that aside and get into this universe, you have a good time. And I, for one, was excited to see what Medrano was cooking up for season two. Let’s say it right away, it doesn’t disappoint. This sophomore season is an entertaining one with higher stakes. Following Charlie’s victory against Heaven’s army, a new set of problems arises. On one side, the angels must deal with the aftermath of Sir Pentious’s redemption and its implications for the future. On the other side, Charlie wants to prove she can redeem other people, while ‘The Vees’, led by Vox, are trying to take over Heaven and Hell.

This is an eventful season, marked by many surprises and a satisfying buildup. All the characters have their own time to shine within the overall story, whether it’s with a song or a dialogue scene. Charlie is the main protagonist of the series, but this season, Vox is just as much a main character. He’s always there, and his rise to power is an exciting one. He is exactly the type of antagonist you’ll love to hate. Vox’s plan is meticulously crafted. He’s the real star of the season. Indeed, he’s a scene stealer. Undeniably, Vox is a memorable and diabolical villain.

LESS FLAWS

Unlike the first season, the flaws within this universe and how it works feel less apparent this time. That’s because we have already been there, and now we are immersed in this universe, so it doesn’t stand out as much. At the end of the season, the plots that started are concluded, giving the audience direction on where Season 3 is headed. It’s going to be exciting to see what happens next!

VISUALS & SONGS

Undoubtedly, Hazbin Hotel has an animation style that stands out among other American animated series. It’s a visual feast for the eyes. Its colourful palette and stylish designs fully immerse you in this universe. Moreover, this series is a musical, so a new season means new songs. And season 2 surely delivers on that side. There are plenty of catchy new songs. The melodies and the way these songs are performed remind me of songs in Disney films, but with an adult twist. The songs arrive at the right time, they tell a story, and they are here to have an impact on what’s going on; they also have a rhythm that catches the audience’s attention. This is precisely why I think it works so well.
