Review: Batman: Caped Crusader Returns

After a triumphant debut in 2024, Batman: Caped Crusader returns for a second season. The series is executive produced by J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker), Matt Reeves (The Batman), and Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series). Like the first season, this one is also composed of 10 episodes. It premieres on July 31st on Prime Video.

STORY

Batman: The Animated Series was the gold standard for Batman for years. But when Batman: Caped Crusader debuted two years ago, it established a new gold standard. The first season was nothing short of a masterpiece, so expectations for the second season were understandably high. Thankfully, it doesn’t disappoint.

It continues to be an episodic, noir-style detective series, with each episode following Batman as he solves a new crime. The show isn’t afraid to go dark; it makes bold storytelling choices that keep things exciting. Although each episode tells a self-contained story, a narrative thread runs through the entire season, culminating in the final two episodes. There isn’t a single misstep along the way: every episode is captivating, but the finale reaches another level entirely. It is as intense as it gets.

CHARACTERS

Even if you’re a longtime Batman fan—whether through the comics, films, animation, or all of the above—and think you know these characters inside and out, the series still finds ways to surprise you.

That’s important for superhero stories because audiences have already seen so many different interpretations of these characters. To stay fresh, storytellers need to try different things, and that includes taking creative risks. Batman: Caped Crusader does exactly that. It remains faithful to the core of its characters while reinventing them in fresh and compelling ways. Obviously, there are familiar faces returning, as well as new foes.

New foes this season include Edward Nygma (the Riddler) and the Joker. This version of the Riddler is completely unhinged. The Joker is Batman’s most iconic villain, and we have seen several iterations of the character over the years. However, this one feels different from anything we have seen on screen before. This Joker is absolutely terrifying and cold. His actions, his manner of speaking, and his presence send shivers down your spine. He feels more like a villain straight out of a horror film.

VISUALS AND CREDITS

Furthermore, Batman keeps the same costume, one that works perfectly for the era in which the series is set. This animation style is simply what comes to mind when you think of Batman. It’s also impressive to see how much progress has been made between The Animated Series and Caped Crusader.

This season features a striking aerial action sequence involving the Batplane. Because the series is set in the 1940s, it’s not the high-tech Batplane we’ve seen in previous iterations. Instead, it’s a simpler aircraft that fits the period while still feeling unmistakably Batman.

Finally, the first season featured a memorable opening sequence, and that’s part of the DNA of Batman animated series. I’m happy to report that it returns this season. It perfectly sets the mood with its ominous theme and dark, mysterious atmosphere. The black-and-white visuals complement it beautifully, giving the opening a timeless noir aesthetic.

The series also continues to feature black-and-white end credits set to the Batman theme, with a different background accompanying each episode. Just like in the first season, these are end credits you won’t want to skip. Usually, audiences stick around after superhero movies or shows for the mid-credits or post-credits scenes. Here, you’ll want to stay for the aesthetic.
