Tom Hardy returns as Eddie Brock/ Venom in the Kelly Marcel-directed threequel, Venom: The Last Dance. Hitting screens on October 25th.

Venom is back. And this time, it could be for the final time. After being known simply as Venom 3 up until now, the Sony threequel finally has its title. Hitting screens on October 25th, we will get Venom: The Last Dance. The film once again stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/ Venom in what the actor says is the end of the Venom trilogy. Could this mean that the actor is done with the character after this third movie?

Little information has been disclosed about the movie; however, it has been confirmed that Juno Temple, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Clark Backo are part of the cast. It remains unclear whether Michelle Williams will return to her role as Anne Weying or if Reid Scott will reappear as Dan Lewis. Or even if Stephen Graham as Patrick Mulligan will be in the film, considering the plot thread left open at the climax of the last film. All we know for sure is the film is being written, co-produced, and directed by Kelly Marcel in her directorial debut from a story she wrote with Tom Hardy.

THE ROT SETS IN

The film needs to go some to re-energise the Sony live-action Spider-Verse. The rot set in with the second Venom film, Venom: Let There Be Carnage. For what should have been a sequel that blew the audience away, becoming one of the best comic book movies of all time, it was a disaster. It was a box office success but it left a lot to be desired. My nephew is the biggest Venom fan there is, and even he walked out of the film expressing his disgust. He was so unimpressed that he can’t bear to watch even 30 seconds of the film now. Carnage, a superb character who could have elevated the sequel, was sidelined and grossly misused. And that was unforgivable.

MORBIUS

The rot got even worse with Morbius. Again, here was a film that could and should have been a great chapter in Sony’s Spider-Verse. With Jared Leto and Matt Smith leading the cast, the film had the makings of being a new franchise. Instead, it was a complete fizzle. (Read our review here.) Throw in the return of Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes / Vulture, reprising his role from the MCU film Spider-Man: Homecoming and the film should have been brilliant. But even Keaton himself has said he has no idea why he appeared in the film, saying he is just as confused as the rest of us with his cameo.

MADAME WEB

Ok, I have a confession to make. I haven’t actually seen Madame Web. Usually, this would be unforgivable. But from the looks of things, most of the world’s population didn’t see it either. I have no idea if the film is as bad as they say it is. But the fact remains that the failure of the film is yet another nail in the coffin of Sony’s Spider franchise. When your main star, Dakota Johnson even slams the film, you know you’re in trouble. And that’s before Aaron Taylor-Johnson makes his long-delayed debut as Kraven The Hunter in August.

SONY NEEDS VENOM!

You may be asking why I’ve gone through the failure of Sony’s Spider-Verse above. The answer is simple. If the new movie is the final time Tom Hardy will appear as Venom and the franchise ends this October, Sony has a problem. Forget the animated Spider-Man movies that are critically and audience acclaimed, the live-action franchise could be over. To be frank, Sony needs Venom. Of course, they could keep the character going and go in a new direction with a new actor. But fans want to see a fourth Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man movie with Tom Hardy as Venom taking on our friendly neighbourhood web-crawler.

Tom Holland stars as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Columbia Pictures’ SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME.

Whether we get it or not is seriously up for debate. In a perfect world, in around two or three years, we will be sitting down to Spider-Man Vs. Venom (Hey, I couldn’t think of a better title on the fly.) But if this is to be Hardy’s swansong, then the film needs to go out on a high. Take the three Spider-Man movies of Holland’s out of the equation and Venom is the only character that has made money. Whether or not this is the end for the character remains to be seen. But whether it is or it isn’t, I know that I’ll be sitting down to see the movie when it opens. I just hope that the film is the best of the Venom trilogy. The character and the audience deserve that much. So, for now, we are waiting for the first trailer and more news to be announced regarding the film. The seven-month countdown to Venom’s return is on.
