Star Wars: The Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Edition Earns $15 Million At The Worldwide Box Office

George Lucas’ Star Wars: The Phantom Menace dominates the North American box office with $8.1M in domestic revenue.

The Force is still strong with The Phantom Menace. George Lucas’s massive prequel returned to cinemas this past weekend to celebrate the May the 4th festivities and made a considerable profit at the box office. The movie surpassed all expectations and claimed the second spot in North America, earning $8.1 million on 2700 screens. Thanks to Star Wars fans worldwide, the release made a whopping $14.48 million globally.

For a film that is widely available to watch at home, that’s an incredible return. The film has become the 19th highest-grossing film of all time, adjusted for inflation. It is currently ranked just behind Jurassic Park, which sold 90,312,100 tickets and has an adjusted total of $826,205,195. Regarding domestic box office, The Phantom Menace is now in 22nd place with a new total of $482,624,677, trailing behind Finding Dory. The film has outperformed the 40th-anniversary re-release of Return of the Jedi, which earned $5.1 million in April 2024.

25th ANNIVERSARY RE-RELEASE

Per Box Office Pro: Phantom Menace‘s weekend is a nice turn of events for the film. It kicked off George Lucas’ Star Wars prequel trilogy in 1999, and for years after, was a punchline for audiences and Star Wars fans, but has grown in appreciation in the decades since, with younger fans who grew up on the film coming into adulthood, and star Ewan McGregor reprising his role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for his own Disney+ series in 2022, helping further build nostalgia for the film. It returned to theaters as part of the film’s 25th anniversary, as well as for May the 4th, the unofficial Star Wars holiday.
