Holy first look, Batman! Prime Video has shared our first look at the upcoming animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. The all-new series coming from J.J. Abrams, Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves, and James Tucker promises to be one of the streamer’s big summer hitters. And there is nobody better to bring this series to the screen than Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Bruce Timm.

However, Timm has turned the landscape upside down by grounding this series as a 1940s noir detective story. But that’s not all; many of the Dark Knight’s greatest foes will also be getting a 1940s makeover. Harley Quinn has been reinvented as an Asian American who has no ties to the Clown Prince of Crime, The Joker. She will have a completely new persona for this reimagined era and will work as Bruce Wayne’s psychiatrist.

HARLEY QUINN
“I co-created the character, so I have a lot of love and affection for her, but I thought there might be something interesting about bringing her on the show, just not as Joker’s girlfriend,” Timm says. “So how do we do that? A big part was just doing a basic flip. The original Dr. Quinzel was a little bit more serious, and then when she became Harley, she got really goofy and weird. So we thought, what if we reverse that? When she’s Dr. Quinzel, she’s a little bit more whimsical and fun, and then when she’s Harley Quinn, she’s scary.” Timm told EW.

Clayface and Catwoman have returned to their classic retro outfits. Catwoman’s purple outfit from the vintage comics has been updated for a new generation, as has Clayface’s traditional look inspired by classic horror movies. The Joker and The Penguin will also be making a comeback. With the addition of the film noir visual animation style, fans can look forward to an exceptional series when it premieres on Prime Video this summer.

Batman: Caped Crusader premieres Thursday, August 1, on Prime Video.
