J.J. Abrams, Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves, and James Tucker open up about the upcoming animated series Batman: Caped Crusader

Aside from showcasing the epic new trailer for The Batman; DC FanDome offered Bat-fans new details about the upcoming animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. J.J. Abrams, Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves, and James Tucker were on hand to clue us in on what we can expect from the series when it debuts on HBO Max.

Thankfully, our friends over at DC have sent over the full presentation for our viewing pleasure. Check it out below:

BRUCE TIMM

Being one of the minds behind the beloved Batman: The Animated Series, Bruce Timm knows all too well what it takes to bring a landmark Batman series to the screen. And not even he could hide his excitement about working alongside Matt Reeves, J.J Abrams, and James Tucker. Timm said Batman: Caped Crusader will be “more Batman: The Animated Series than Batman: The Animated Series,” and will be free of the Saturday morning shackles of its predecessor.  Caped Crusader will follow the path carved out by Matt Reeves’ big-screen adventure and will follow the Dark Knight during his early days.

Tucker went further by revealing that the series will be set before Batman has earned the trust of Commissioner Gordon. And more notably, the Caped Crusader will be without his customary gadgets and vehicles. These will be developed as the series develops ensuring a far more gritty, grounded take on the Dark Knight.

MATT REEVES

The Batman director Matt Reeves said, “In this new iteration, it’s just Batman right now… The Justice League doesn’t exist, there aren’t any other superheroes, it’s just Batman. You’re watching this lone figure swimming through the cesspool of Gotham. It’s Batman alone.” Bruce Timm expanded, “He’s Batman, whether he’s wearing the mask or not, and Bruce Wayne is a phony person, he’s a construction Batman has created to deflect suspicion from his activities.”

THE VILLAINS

When it comes to the rogue’s gallery of villains, Timm made a bold claim by saying that although the villains from Batman The Animated Series are icons in their own right, the versions from Caped Crusader will be just as iconic and powerful as their predecessors. Characters like The Joker, The Penguin, and Catwoman will all be making a welcome return. And coupled with the film noir visual animation style, fans can start to look forward to a truly special series when it debuts on HBO Max and Cartoon Network.

Batman: Caped Crusader will premiere on HBO Max and Cartoon Network in 2023.
