The John Wick franchise is expanding again with an all-new spin-off featuring Donnie Yen’s blind assassin, Caine.
We’re returning to The Continental for another spin-off from the John Wick universe. Lionsgate has officially given the green light to a new movie focussing on Donnie Yen’s blind assassin, Caine. Yen is formally on board to reprise his role from John Wick: Chapter 4, with filming expected to begin in Hong Kong next year. Robert Askins will write the screenplay.
CAINE AND AKIRA
Details about the plot of the spin-off are still a mystery. However, in the after-credit sequence of Keanu Reeves’ fourth outing, it was revealed that Caine, newly released from his commitment to the High Table, is stalked by a vengeful Akira. It’s unclear whether the spin-off will focus on Akira’s quest for revenge. Caine is desperate to reunite with his estranged daughter and has a haunted past to explore so that the film may focus on a different story.

CAINE
“From the moment Donnie Yen appeared on screen in John Wick: Chapter 4, he captivated audiences and created an authentic, emotional connection that left an indelible mark and had fans asking for more,” said Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair. “The John Wick universe that Chad, Basil, Erica and Keanu have built offers a tapestry of fascinating characters brought to life by the most extraordinary performers, and we’re excited to have one of the world’s biggest superstars on board to continue this journey.”
“Working on John Wick: Chapter 4 was an extraordinary experience,” said Yen. “The reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like myself, Chad, Basil, and Erica push themselves to create action, fights, and stunts that are not only thrilling, inventive and artistic, but also expressive of character, story, and emotion. Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role.”

EXPANDING THE UNIVERSE
The Caine spin-off is the next chapter in the expanding universe overseen by Chad Stahelski’s deal with the studio. “Ballerina” is the first installment in the expansion and is set to be released in 2025. The film, starring Ana De Armas, will feature several characters from Keanu Reeves’ big-screen adventures. Ian McShane will reprise his role as Winston, the owner of the Continental Hotel, and the late Lance Reddick will return as Charon, the Continental’s concierge. Anjelica Huston is also returning as the Director, the head of the Ruska Roma. The cast includes Catalina Sandino Moreno, Gabriel Bryne, and Norman Reedus.
Ballerina centers on a skilled assassin who sets out to get revenge when hitmen kill her family.

RELEASE
The studio has not confirmed an expected release window yet. However, filming is scheduled to start next year in Hong Kong, so it’s safe to assume that the movie will be released in 2026. In the meantime, we can all look forward to “Ballerina” hitting cinemas next year.
