Stop Making Sense is 40 years old this year. In celebration, a tribute album has been recorded as well as the film being completely restored.

Why stop making sense? Why a movie? And why a big suit? Where do the odd movements come from? What will the band do next? The questions arose in 1984 with the release of the concert film “Stop Making Sense,” which documents the Talking Heads at the peak of their fame during the tour for their 1983 album “Speaking in Tongues.” The band members take the stage one by one, accompanied by a group of guest musicians. They deliver a performance that showcases their entire career, enhanced by creative choreography and visuals. The film was directed by the Academy Award-winning Jonathan Demme.

Talking Heads raised the $1.2 million budget by themselves, taking a risk that paid off. The film grossed just under $5.4 million in 1984. Last year’s re-release of the film garnered an additional $6.9 million, raising its total box office to $12.4 million. In honour of the movie’s 40th anniversary, a tribute album named “Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense” was released. Miley Cyrus’ dynamite cover of the Talking Heads anthem “Psycho Killer.” And all-star performances from The National, Toro y Moi, Blondshell, Kevin Abstract and more. You can listen to the album here.
