After just one season, Lucasfilm has canceled Leslye Headland’s Star Wars: The Acolyte.
Sad news, Acolyte fans. Unfortunately, after just one season, Lucasfilm has decided to cancel Leslye Headland’s highly ambitious Star Wars series. Despite the show leaving several open plot threads for a potential season two, the studio has decided to put the series out to pasture. The cancellation doesn’t come as a surprise, especially considering the mixed reactions the series received. However, knowing that the unresolved plot threads will never be explored or resolved is disheartening.
The series took some big swings and presented a fresh take on the mythology of the Jedi and Sith. But the bold and ambitious challenge to the established lore proved too much for some fans. The response to the series was highly mixed with fans and critics alike and was eventually review-bombed on Rotten Tomatoes. Furthermore, following the season premiere, the series experienced a significant decline in viewership, prompting the studio to consider greenlighting another season.

THE SERIES
Our team is divided on the quality of the series. Many of our writers loved it, while others feel it has not justified its existence. This difference in opinion is reflected in the range of reviews we have published on the site.
In his THREE-STAR REVIEW, our Editor Phil Roberts said, “The Acolyte has made a strong start. Guided by Leslye Headland, the series skillfully delves into the Jedi lore. The visuals are stunning, and the fight scenes are incredibly well-choreographed. It’s a rich and fulfilling Star Wars series. However, some issues need to be overcome to be embraced by the broader world of Star Wars. However, with its fantastic new characters and an outstanding performance from Lee Jung-jae, the series has opened the door to a new era of Star Wars storytelling, which is an exciting prospect.”
In his FIVE STAR REVIEW, our Collectables Editor Thomas Storai said, “The Acolyte delivers an intense and action-packed episode, its best yet and the best episode of Star Wars television. It features nonstop lightsaber fights with fantastic choreography. Undoubtedly, it keeps you on the edge of your seat—an emotional rollercoaster!”

THE FUTURE
Despite the negative reviews, the series did garner acclaim thanks to several key episodes. Manny Jacinto’s reveal as the mysterious Stranger was a big hit, and the lightsaber duels were praised as some of the best in the franchise. Unfortunately, the positives weren’t enough to outweigh the negatives, so the future of The Acolyte looks uncertain. It remains unclear whether the unresolved plotlines will be addressed in a future series or literary project. Those decisions lie solely with Lucasfilm’s studio heads. However, with numerous upcoming projects in the pipeline, Lucasfilm’s focus is now shifting towards them.
The next series to run the fandom gauntlet is SKELETON CREW, which will premiere on December 3rd. The series represents a radical shift in tone and takes us back to the MandoVerse for a kid-centric space adventure similar to the classic Amblin films from the 80s. In 2025, ANDOR season two culminates the story of Rogue One’s Cassian Andor, and a second season of Dave Filoni’s AHSOKA is well into development.

FAREWELL ACOLYTE
The potential ahead might seem promising. But the setback of THE ACOLYTE is undeniably a significant blow to Lucasfilm’s vision for the franchise. If the studio continues to disregard its fanbase and persist in pushing the boundaries of the established lore, it is likely to encounter similar outcomes. George Lucas originally framed the franchise as a space opera centered around the timeless conflict between the forces of good and evil. This core essence has been upheld for nearly five decades. Therefore, in order for Lucasfilm and Disney to win back the affection and loyalty of the fans, they may need to consider making some concessions.
All episodes of The Acolyte are streaming on Disney Plus now.
