SYNOPSIS
Set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films, “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” tells the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg—a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.

THE MASTER RETURNS!
Warner Bros. is fully committed to producing a high-quality addition to Tolkien’s world. They have assembled a team of top talents to bring the project to fruition, including Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the original team behind The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The team works at different points in the project to ensure the quality matches their previous work. The creative team returning from Jackson’s trilogy includes Oscar winners Alan Lee and Richard Taylor. Joining them is the esteemed Tolkien illustrator John Howe. Based on the first trailer, it’s clear that their hard work has paid off.
Oscar winner Philippa Boyens, known for her work on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies, is producing the film alongside Jason DeMarco and Joseph Chou. The duo has recently collaborated on the Blade Runner: Black Lotus series. The executive producers are Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson, Sam Register, Carolyn Blackwood, and Toby Emmerich. The screenplay is by Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou, with the story by Addiss, Matthews, and Boyens, based on characters created by J.R.R. Tolkien.

THE CAST
Thankfully, the collaboration of creatives doesn’t only extend to the production crew. Kenji Kamiyama has brought together an incredibly talented voice cast to bring his vision of Middle Earth to the screen. The voice cast is led by Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand, the mighty King of Rohan. Gaia Wise stars as his daughter Héra, and Luke Pasqualino rounds out the main cast as Wulf.
Reprising her role from the Rings trilogy, Miranda Otto returns as Éowyn, the Shieldmaiden of Rohan. She also serves as the tale’s narrator. And finally, Lorraine Ashbourne, Yazdan Qafouri, Benjamin Wainwright, Laurence Ubong Williams, Shaun Dooley, Michael Wildman, Jude Akuwudike, Bilal Hasna, and Janine Duvitski round out the supporting cast.

RELEASE
It’s clear that the latest installment in the franchise deserves its place at the top of our winter watchlist. The film looks exceptional. Kamiyama has an eye for adventure, drama, and compelling storytelling, which is evident in the first trailer. But can the film live up to Peter Jackson’s magnum opus? I wouldn’t bet against it. The film looks exquisite, and the animation is truly breathtaking. Ultimately, it’s nothing short of an early Christmas present for Tolkien fans. So, get set to head back to Middle Earth this Christmas. It might not have the One Ring, but it’s definitely going to be precious.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will release in cinemas on December 13, 2024.
