Mother Vera, Cécile Embleton and Alys Tomlinson’s stunning feature will make its UK debut at the BFI London Film Festival. In partnership with American Express, screening as part of the documentary competition. Set inside a convent outside Minsk, we are introduced to Vera. She has spent 20 years in refuge amongst men undergoing addiction rehabilitation. A conversation with a mother prompts Vera to reflect on her own past addiction. And the tragic events that lead to her life in the convent, and also consider her own pathways to find hope and eventually true freedom.

Following its World Premiere at Visions du Reel 2024, where it competed in the International Feature competition. And US premiere at Camden International Film Festival as part of the Harrell Award Main Competition, Mother Vera will premiere to UK audiences on 13th October at the Curzon Soho in London.

PREMISE

After two decades in a Belarusian Orthodox monastery, Vera reflects on her unexpected path to nunhood. Rooted in a history of addiction.
