Hot Toys Review | Super Battle Droid (Star Wars: Attack of the Clones)

Get the inside scoop on the Hot Toys Super Battle Droid figure. Our review explores the accessories, packaging, and overall value of this collectible.

The Hot Toys Super Battle Droid figure adds to the growing Separatist army. Part of the line commemorating the 20th anniversary of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, the figure raises the question: Is it worth the investment? Let’s delve into our review to find out.

THE BOX AND ACCESSORIES

As is customary with anniversary editions, the initial part of the packaging is identical to other Star Wars collectibles, featuring a promotional image of the figure and the Star Wars logo. However, you’ll find the vintage style-inspired box inside once you remove this section. Regarding accessories, the Super Battle Droid only includes a display base and a battle-damaged elbow. This is disappointing, especially considering that Hot Toys included accessories from The Clone Wars for other figures. They easily could have included the missile launcher arm with this one. It feels like a missed opportunity.

The display base is the sandy footprints base. We’ve seen this one several times, and as usual, the problem is the footprints. Even more so for a droid, his feet don’t match the footprints, so it can look weird depending on how you want to pose him. A version without the footprints is finally coming with Captain Rex from the Ahsoka series, but we needed that update for this figure. The battle-damaged elbow is a simple elbow without the forearm to recreate one of the scenes from the Geonosis Arena.

THE FIGURE

Originally, Hot Toys had planned to make a Super Battle Droid figure based on its appearance in The Mandalorian. This was a bulkier version, taking inspiration from The Clone Wars. That version was displayed over the years at different events, but the Attack of the Clones version was released. It’s a pleasant surprise. I prefer the bulkier version because of The Clone Wars; it looks more menacing. Anyway, I’m still happy we finally have a Super Battle Droid figure! This is a great figure.

This one is light, unlike C-3PO, which is quite heavy because of the diecast. He’s entirely made of plastic. To my biggest surprise, it looks good. The paint has a nice metallic feel. This would have looked even better with diecast, but Hot Toys managed to pull off something quite satisfying with plastic. There is also a weathering that feels realistic. It’s not too much, just enough to make it feel like this droid is on the battlefield. For the light-up effect, this one doesn’t use small batteries; you need triple-A batteries, which are not included. This is just a red light. Plus, this figure was announced at the same time as figures with USB-powered lightsabers. So, it’s odd that this one doesn’t work with USB. This means that when batteries are on, the figure will be heavier.
