Hot Toys Review | Baylan Skoll (Star Wars: Ahsoka)

A new Hot Toys figure from Dave Filoni’s Star Wars: Ahsoka series has just hit the shelves early. Following the release of Grand Admiral Thrawn, it’s now time for Baylan Skoll to shine. This figure is now available at Sideshow Collectibles! The big question is, does it accurately capture Ray Stevenson’s likeness, or will it fall short like so many others before it?

THE BOX AND ACCESSORIES

This is your usual Star Wars collectibles box. It’s a black box with a promotional picture of the figure and the Star Wars logo. For figures from the Ahsoka series, you get a blue colored strip with two additional photos of the figure to show you different ways to pose it in your collection. You get almost everything you need for this figure in terms of accessories. With Ray Stevenson’s passing, it’s clear we won’t get another Baylan figure with his likeness, so it would have been better if Hot Toys had included everything with this one. The one accessory that’s missing is the cape he has in the season 1 finale. We saw it for just that one scene, but it still would have been an excellent accessory to get.

The display base is your usual Star Wars interior base. This time, it’s painted in black. It works for Baylan Skoll, but it would have also been nice if they had used an environment base of Seatos or Peridea instead. Then, he comes with eleven hands. I love it when Hot Toys includes that many interchangeable hands. You get everything you need to recreate his different poses. The ring on his left hand has been beautifully sculpted. It’s excellent work. There’s a pair of fist hands, a pair of relaxed hands, a pair of hands to hold the lightsaber, a pair of Force hands, and four gesture hands.

ACCESSORIES

He comes with his lightsaber. It’s a unique design that perfectly suits a character like Baylan. As usual with recent figures, you also have a USB-powered hilt. You can display them with either a normal or an action blade. Finally, Baylan comes with his black cape from the early episodes. This one has wires inside so that you can adjust it for poses.

THE FIGURE

Ray Stevenson was imposing as Baylan Skoll, and Hot Toys have skillfully recreated that in figure format. He is thicker than your usual figure. He will draw attention to any collection. Hot Toys has done an excellent job of recreating Baylan’s costume. There’s a lot of detail on it, as well as different textures of fabric. The boots are two separate pieces that allow feet articulation. This is entirely made of plastic, but it’s been sculpted in a way that doesn’t feel like plastic. With recent figures, Hot Toys has been getting good at this for the boots. Plastic boots with a pleather feel are much better than actual pleather boots. Over time, it won’t get damaged.

The skirt is purposely damaged on the ends. The shoulder and forearm armor parts are also damaged here and there with scratches and weathering. It shows that Baylan has been through a lot. He’s a seasoned warrior. The precious stone on the belt uses the same shade of green as the ring. These two are the first things you see in the figure. The color really pops. With Hot Toys, it’s all about the details. Fantastic work has been done with the torso and all the sewing.

THE HEADSCULPT

The headsculpt was made by Jeong Dain and painted by JC Hong. Undoubtedly, this is a fantastic headsculpt that perfectly captures the likeness of Ray Stevenson. I love the serious look on his face; it’s so similar to the character. And yes, he has the separate rolling eyeballs feature. We’re only getting one figure of Ray, as Baylan and Hot Toys have made sure to nail it.

Baylan Skoll is a must-have for enthusiasts of the Ahsoka series, and the stunning headsculpt is a beautiful homage to the late Ray Stevenson.
