Paramount+’s Star Trek: Section 31 is just days from release, and the streamer is heightening the excitement by beaming down a treasure trove of Trek delights. The new movie premieres globally on January 24, and to get us all in the mood for this new adventure, Paramount+ has released a cargo hold full of new stills that showcase Philippa Georgiou’s new crew like never before. Hollywood mainstay Michelle Yeoh reprises her fan-favorite role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery in the film. However, in a strange twist, Georgiou has joined the infamous Section 31 – an entity charged with protecting the United Federation of Planets. But will the skeletons in her closet derail her quest for redemption?

But before we discuss the film’s qualities, let’s open hailing frequencies and check out the new stills in all their glory.

REVIEW

I had high hopes for the film when I checked it out earlier this week, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite win me over. While I appreciate that it took a bold step outside of the franchise’s comfort zone, I felt that it didn’t quite meet the quality I was hoping for. In my review, I said: “Sadly, Olatunde Osunsanmi’s Star Trek: Section 31 amounts to little more than disposable bargain bin fare. By moving away from the franchise’s traditional formula, the movie lacks the depth and quality to become more than the sum of its parts. Although Michelle Yeoh turns in an admirable performance and works wonders with the material, its clichéd backstory and lack of character development prevent it from becoming anything more than the franchise’s black sheep.” Check out my full review here.

CAST & CREATIVES

Alongside the iconic Michelle Yeoh, Section 31 has gathered a fantastic supporting cast to return the ship to dry dock. Joining Yeoh in this final frontier are Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez, Miku Martineau, and James Hiroyuki Liao.

Star Trek: Section 31 is directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi and based on a screenplay by Craig Sweeny, with a story created by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt. The film is executive produced by Alex Kurtzman, Craig Sweeny, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, and Michelle Yeoh. CBS Studios produces it in collaboration with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

RELEASE

What a fantastic treasure trove of new stills. Despite its disappointing results, Section 31 is a landmark event for the Star Trek community. After all, it isn’t every day that a new Trek movie premieres on Paramount’s streaming platform. So, the eyes of the Federation will be watching its success like a cloaked Klingon Bird of Prey. While it might not reach the heights we hope for, I still recommend giving it a shot! It could end up being a bit of a rough patch for the franchise, but at the end of the day, it’s still Star Trek, so why not cozy up and enjoy it on Paramount+?

Star Trek: Section 31 launches globally on Paramount+ on January 24.
