Light & Magic returns for an all-new season 2 to showcase the masterwork of the incredible ILM team.
Arriving on Friday, April 18, to kick off Star Wars Celebration Japan, the second season of Light & Magic is back with three new episodes! This season highlights the fantastic folks at Industrial Light and Magic and their extensive journey of creating movie magic as they gear up for the 50th anniversary on May 28. Joe Johnston, known for directing The Wolfman, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Jumanji, is taking the reins from Lawrence Kasdan this time around. Get ready for an inside look at some classic ILM projects!
The first season of the eye-opening documentary was a breathtaking affair. It offered some incredible insights into how the team at ILM made some of the most iconic images in cinema history. It showcased everything from Jurassic Park to Star Wars and Star Trek to The Terminator.

THE SERIES
The first season of Light & Magic was released in 2022, a documentary showing off their work behind the scenes on more than 300 movies, and Collider is thrilled to partner with Disney, Lucasfilm, and Imagine Documentaries to announce that the second season of Light & Magic will officially premiere on April 18 with three new episodes, with Joe Johnston taking over directorial duties from Lawrence Kasdan.
Collider’s Mike Zimmerman also spoke with Light & Magic director Joe Johnston about Season 2, where he confirmed that it will pick up “right after Jurassic Park,” but that it would not follow a strict timeline and would instead jump around all over the place.
Johnston also mentioned that the work ILM did with other movies such as Twister and Pirates of the Caribbean will be featured heavily in Season 2, along with Casper and War of the Worlds.
Light & Magic Season 2 will premiere on April 18 on Disney+.

THE FIRST SEASON
The debut season of the show was a sensation. In my FIVE STAR REVIEW, I said: “Far from just serving as a Star Wars origin story, Light & Magic is nothing short of spectacular. The series is rich in history. Low on disappointment and high on praise for the pioneers that revolutionized our cinematic experiences. And rightly so. It presents a rich and compelling story and catalogs how a team of ragtag rebels came together and became a family. One whose lineage can be traced back to the original STAR WARS and witnessed fully realized in The MandoVerse. A place where the technology pioneered by George Lucas and his quest for pure excellence takes us to the galaxy far, far away every week.”

RELEASE
This is such great news! The debut season of Light & Magic really touched many of us with its exceptional storytelling and insights. It’s exciting to think about how the second season will delve even deeper into ILM’s latest achievements. These new episodes are bound to showcase the incredible techniques that are shaping the industry today. I can’t wait to see how they inspire all of us.
Get ready because Light & Magic Season 2 emerges from the hallowed halls at ILM on April 18th.
