The Cast of Avengers Doomsday Has Assembled!

Can Avengers: Doomsday actually pull off the impossible and beat Avengers: Endgame at the global box office? Plus, can it win over the MCU fans? Annlyel chimes in on the discussion.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga came to an emotional close with Avengers: Endgame, and it felt like one of the most momentous moments in recent cinematic history. Even the box office numbers backed it up. Endgame became the first movie to earn a billion dollars in its global opening weekend and would briefly own the spot for the highest-grossing movie of all time. Marvel fans were especially pleased with the film’s emotional outing. But it wasn’t long before it became clear that this was nowhere near the end for Marvel Studios. If anything, it seems like it was only the beginning.

Since “Endgame,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been trying to regain its footing. The journey has not been smooth, as the franchise has faced challenges with inconsistent storytelling—such as uncertainty about whether Thanos’ brother, played by Harry Styles, will return—and a specific group of dissatisfied fans who tweet “M-She-U” each time a woman takes on a lead role in a project. However, it seems that the MCU is finally starting to come together like it used to. Marvel Studios’ recent livestream announcing the cast for “Avengers: Doomsday” was a clear indication of this positive shift.

DOOMSDAY HYPE!

We Marvel loyalists probably asked ourselves a few times in the past few years if we’d ever see a Marvel movie reach the same levels of hype that Infinity War or Endgame had. But apparently, by not having been given an Avengers movie for over half a decade, our starvation for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is greater than ever. Like myself, tens of millions of people tuned into a five-hour livestream to stare at actors’ names on the backs of chairs. And that was all it took to get people talking about what is now the highly anticipated Avengers film. And the live stream didn’t disappoint with some exciting surprise announcements.

EPIC RETURNS!

Channing Tatum’s return as Gambit was one of the undoubted highlights, considering how fantastic his debut was in Deadpool and Wolverine. Simu Liu will finally return as Shang-Chi after a too-long hiatus, and James Marsden gets a chance to play a Cyclops who hopefully is as cool as he was in X-Men ’97. But I was incredibly excited to see Tom Hiddleston, Tenoch Huerta, and Letitia Wright among the other cast members as well.

So, with this ingenious marketing and the brilliant idea to cast Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, it seems pretty clear that Avengers: Doomsday has a real chance to be as big as Endgame. Of course, the emotional cumulation that led to Endgame is non-existent in the lead-up to Doomsday, but Doomsday’s intrigue is its unpredictability. With a spiraling narrative whose threads feel kind of all over the place, Doctor Doom’s arrival feels out of place, yet there is serious potential here.

THE LEGACY OF DOOM!

Considering how iconic Doctor Doom is in Marvel comic lore, the prospect of Doom being portrayed accurately in live-action is fascinating. If the storytelling can deliver, 2027’s Secret Wars can potentially be the cinematic event of the decade.
