“Frank Drebin, Detective Lieutenant, Police Squad!” Those words still rattle around my brain to this day. They still cause me to burst out laughing when I think of the short-lived comedy Police Squad! and the subsequent movie adaptations of The Naked Gun movies. Leslie Nielsen had me in fits of uncontrolled laughter as Drebin, playing it straight all the way while everything went to hell. By the third movie, even though it was still a hilarious riot, the material was starting to wear thin, stretching out the joke just a little too far at times. However, it ended the movie franchise on its own terms and went out on its feet.
Hollywood doesn’t like decent franchises lying dormant. This August sees a new version of The Naked Gun. Titled…The Naked Gun, the film is the fourth film in the franchise. It also goes by the name of The Naked Gun 4 1⁄4: Law of Toughness, although I doubt it will keep that moniker. Of course, there’s no longer Leslie Nielsen to lead the film. Instead, we get Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr, the son of the legendary Frank Drebin, while Paul Walter Hauser is Capt. Ed Hocken. Also, the film isn’t a spoof this time; it will be an action comedy. A teaser for the film has been revealed today.

Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson) follows in his father’s footsteps in THE NAKED GUN, directed by Akiva Schaffer (Saturday Night Live, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) and from producer Seth MacFarlane (Ted, Family Guy). Joining the case are cast Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, with Danny Huston.
