Rungano Nyoni’s surreal and entrancing ON BECOMING A GUINEA FOWL is now available to watch at home. The film, distributed by Picturehouse Entertainment in the UK and by A24 in the USA, is written and directed by Rungano Nyoni. The film competed in the Un Certain Regard section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, winning the Best Director prize. It stars Susan Chardy, Elizabeth Chisela, and Henry B.J. Phiri. The film is a fiercely brilliant story of family secrets. The trailer for the film is below.
THE PREMISE
On an empty road in the middle of the night, Shula stumbles across the body of her uncle. As funeral proceedings begin around them, she and her cousins bring to light the buried secrets of their middle-class Zambian family in filmmaker Rungano Nyoni’s surreal and vibrant reckoning with the lies we tell ourselves.
Element Pictures, BBC Film, Fremantle and A24 are the production companies behind the film. The film, produced by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe, has a runtime of 95 minutes.
