A New Look at the Characters of Jurassic World Rebirth

Meet the characters in Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic World Rebirth, a sequel that aims to restore the original essence of the Jurassic trilogy.

With Jurassic World Rebirth‘s release just two months away, Universal Pictures is firing up the publicity campaign. Gareth Edwards’ new take on the Jurassic legacy promises to take audiences back to the essence of the original Jurassic trilogy, with David Koepp, the writer of Steven Spielberg’s entries in the saga, back on writing duties. Together with Steven Spielberg’s guidance, the duo has set their sights on bringing the edge back to the franchise and moving away from the over-the-top action used in Colin Trevorrow’s recent trilogy.

Now, with the film looming on the horizon, the studio has shared new details that hint at what we can expect from the movie when it lands in cinemas in July. As part of the outlet’s summer preview, EW has shared a fresh look at the film, as it reveals that the plot will consist of elements of all three original Jurassic movies and the formula used so successfully in Spielberg’s Jaws.

LEGACY

We’ve known for a while that Scarlett Johansson would be leading the film as covert ops soldier Zora Bennett, but until now, the character’s motives have remained ambiguous. Thankfully, we can now add meat to this character’s bones. In the feature, Gareth Edwards reveals that Zora Bennett is modeled after Sheriff Brody, Roy Scheider’s character in Jaws, with Henry Loomis as the Hooper figure and Duncan Kincaid filling the Quint role. Together, the trio is contracted to infiltrate a biosphere close to the equator packed with dinosaurs and extract DNA from the three biggest creatures of land, sea, and sky for a pharmaceutical company.

Johnasson told EW, “Zora has had a long career in the military and in private security. She is someone who has dedicated her life to service and to helping people. She has experienced a lot of loss, yet she maintains a lot of positivity and humor, even when things are hard. I wanted her to have a lot of sparkle. She is someone everyone wants to hang out with. She is a good-hearted person and a loyal friend. Of course, David gave her a lot of gusto in his amazing writing. I just added my part to bring her to life.”

THE DNA OF THE FRANCHISE

With Koepp reverting to the formula that made the franchise so successful, the writer has called upon the components of the Spielberg era to stick the landing. The classic storyline of a team of specialists heading to a dino-packed island for research purposes is taken directly from The Lost World: Jurassic Park. The accidental release of the dinosaur monstrosities, including the ominously sounding Distortus Rex (or D-Rex as it is affectionately known), stems from Michael Crichton’s original novel. And finally, adding to the human peril is the Jurassic Park/Jurassic Park III plot of a family in danger.

Here, the Delgado Family fights for survival as their vessel is attacked by sea-faring dinosaurs and washes up on the shore of the research facility. Navigating through this dinosaur-filled terrain, they encounter the franchise’s greatest critters, including the classic Tyrannosaurus. This allowed Koepp to finally include the raft sequence from the original Jurassic Park in the film.

UNLEASH THE D-REX

With their mission going awry and some of the mutant dinos escaping containment, Bennett’s team is forced to launch a rescue attempt to keep the Delgados from harm. However, with the D-Rex now free and hunting them, they face a race against time to escape from the island before they become part of the food chain. This is where Gareth Edwards brings all the components together to deliver a Jurassic movie with all the franchise’s hallmarks mixed with the DNA of Jaws. Although the film is still in the editing process, Edwards suggests that the current version of the film is closer to the spirit of Jaws, which hints at what we can expect from the movie when it lands in cinemas on July 2.
