TV Review | The Second Best Hospital in The Galaxy (Season 2)

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy

“The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy delivers another entertaining season. It further explores the lives of Klak and Sleech, bringing new challenges with some good laughs and surprises.”

After an entertaining first season last year, The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy finally returns to Prime Video on May 27. The series was created by Cirocco Dunlap and executive produced by Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne. But can Season 2 build upon the brilliance of the first season? Let’s find out.

STORY

The famous Dr. Klak (Keke Palmer) and Dr. Sleech (Stephanie Hsu) are back in The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy. After the events of Season 1, the two doctors bask in the fame of their success, but it’s not all bright at the hospital. More troubles and challenges come their way. Each episode tells a self-contained story, bringing a new medical problem for Klak and Sleech. Like season 1, the medical aspect of these problems isn’t really the point. What matters is what happens to these characters in these situations. The comedy comes a lot from that.

Furthermore, this season also delves deeper into the lives of these two doctors, including their romantic relationships. Both Klak and Sleech have their own love troubles. Additionally, the Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy continues to offer meaningful LGBT representation, with one of its leads. The friendship between Klak and Sleech is one that works perfectly because of their differences and similarities; it’s always fun to spend more time with them. But it’s just as interesting to see them being explored separately.

Although each episode tells a self-contained story, there is a main storyline this season, and it involves a journalist conducting a deep dive documentary on them. Obviously, things don’t go as planned as she starts digging a little too much into their lives, especially Sleech’s past. When the season ends, you’ll be asking for more. There’s definitely enough material for this series to last a few more seasons.

CAST

Moreover, the all-star cast that gathered for Season 1 once again returns: Stephanie Hsu, Keke Palmer, Kieran Culkin, Sam Smith, Maya Rudolph, and Natasha Lyonne. Stephanie Hsu and Keke Palmer continue to excel as this best-friends duo. Additionally, it’s always a pleasure to hear the voices of Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne. They have voices that are instantly recognizable. These are two actresses who excel in comedy.

VISUALS & OPENING

Finally, this series continues to employ the same animation style as Season One. It’s a common American animation style. But it works for a comedy like this one. This season introduces us to some new alien designs, which are still in line with what was done before – weird and fun designs. Once again, this season features an opening title sequence and credits. It is the same opening as in Season One. It’s an opening that perfectly encapsulates the tone of the series while introducing key characters. However, it’s disappointing that it didn’t get an update for the new season.

VERDICT

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy delivers another entertaining season. It further explores the lives of Klak and Sleech, bringing new challenges with some good laughs and surprises.

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy premieres May 27 on Prime Video.
