Directed by Alex Ross Perry and produced and edited by Robert Greene, Pavements is coming to the MUBI streaming service.
MUBI, the global film distributor, streaming service and production company, announces the streaming release of Alex Ross Perry’s (Her Smell, Listen Up Phillip) kaleidoscopic docu-fiction, Pavements. Produced and edited by Robert Greene (Procession). The film will premiere exclusively on MUBI in North America, the UK, Ireland, Germany, and France on July 11, 2025.
An irreverent, genre-bending portrait of ’90s indie rock band Pavement. The film blends authentic archival footage, contemporary documentary moments, an ironic jukebox musical, a satirical Hollywood biopic, and playful mockumentary sequences. Brilliantly collapsing the boundaries between reality and fiction.
THE PREMISE
As Pavement prepares for their sold-out 2022 reunion tour, the film captures surreal behind-the-scenes preparations for a musical adaptation of their songs. A museum dedicated entirely to the band’s legacy. And a knowingly clichéd Hollywood biopic starring Joe Keery as frontman Stephen Malkmus.
The film creatively blends authentic archival footage with appearances from the band members, along with a cast of actors and comedians. It humorously explores themes of fan obsession, myth-making, and the cultural dynamics surrounding fame. This uniquely layered examination challenges conventional narratives about musicians, combining artistry, absurdity, and humour. Ultimately, it culminates in a refreshingly inventive and endearing tribute to an unforgettable band.

THE CAST
Starring Joe Keery, Jason Schwartzman, Tim Heidecker, Kathryn Gallagher, Michael Esper, and Zoe Lister-Jones. And as themselves: Stephen Malkmus, Scott ‘Spiral Stairs’ Kannberg, Mark Ibold, Steve West, and Bob Nastanovich. Editing by non-fiction innovator Robert Greene (Procession).
Pavements had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and previews at CPH:DOX, Rotterdam International Film Festival, and BFI London Film Festival.

Pavements will stream exclusively on MUBI from July 11th.
