It’s Sunday, so this means it’s time for a new episode of Nyaight of the Living Cat on Crunchyroll. The cat fever is running high. New episodes premiere every Sunday on the streamer, giving us something to look forward to. But can the latest episode build on the foundations os last week’s thrilling curtain raiser? Join us as we unpack episode two.

SURVIVORS
The second episode continues the flashback started at the end of the first episode, revealing the first day of the cat apocalypse. Having the first episode begin right in the middle of the apocalypse and then going back to the first day is a choice that works. Indeed, it reveals the current situation, and then the audience gets to discover how it began. Right from the start, the series lets you know that yes, it’s silly, but it’s also quite serious. After all, it’s an apocalypse. Thus, casualties are necessary to ensure that the characters and the audience realize this is a dangerous situation.
This first day is an intense one, but it also takes the time to introduce a new character – Tsutsumi, Kaoru’s friend who attends the same high school. This character finds herself in a peculiar situation, as she is allergic to cats. This series really has thought about everything. Introducing characters little by little in a series is something that works. It gives the audience time to get attached to them and to learn about them. Which means that when they disappear, you will feel something for them.
Unlike zombies that characters have to kill, no one wants to kill cats. Humans killing cats would be absolutely disgusting to see. So fighting them is different. And fighting isn’t exactly the right word to use in this situation. It’s all about distracting cats and stalling for time in order to survive. This means using water or playing with toys. All these moments are brought to life like intense action scenes. It doesn’t get any better!

BEFORE THE CAT APOCALYPSE
Like the first episode, the story juggles between different moments in time. Episode 2 takes us further back before the apocalypse. These flashbacks have two purposes story-wise. Firstly, it slowly scratches the surface of what really happened with the cat disaster, which is quite intriguing. Secondly, it features the characters in a different light and further establishes the relationships between them. These scenes play it like a slice of life; they are fun and engaging. It’s moments that allow the characters to breathe while they reminisce about the past. But these scenes also foreshadow what is to come for humans, even though they didn’t realize it at the time.
