NEW RELEASES

August is always the final salvo in our warm, cheerful summer season, but Shudder’s carefully curated catalog of titles is anything but jolly. Kick-starting the month’s new releases on August 1st is Another Wolfcop. The sequel to last month’s Wolfcop follows an alcoholic werewolf police officer who springs into action when an eccentric businessman with evil intentions seduces Woodhaven’s residents with a new brewery and hockey team. Cool huh? If that isn’t enough, August 4th delivers a double-header with All The Gods in the Sky, and Pelican Blood, so get ready for some supernatural hijinks and chilling exorcisms.

Fast forward to August 11th, and I Saw the Face of the Devil brings us to the edge of our seats. The film follows Majka, 18, who is experiencing feelings that are out of the ordinary. She is convinced that she is possessed, so she decides to meet Father Marek, an exorcist priest. Also on the 11th, Never Have I Ever highlights the horror of one guy’s worst day, and Castle Freak drags us into the dark recesses of Italy’s castles for a monstrous adventure!

And finally, rounding out the big new releases on August 18th, Shudder is dropping a treasure trove of horror titles to see us through the month. Dark Angel: The Ascent brings a fallen angel to Earth to punish sinners. At the same time, Death of a Vlogger showcases the horrors of an influencer’s vlog when a supernatural entity decides to claim its 15 minutes of fame.

MORE HORROR FUN!

Continuing the big releases on the 18th is Demonic Toys, a gruesome tale of a police officer and her prisoner trapped within the confines of a haunted toy factory, and High Tension introduces us to an idyllic weekend away that turns into a living nightmare. The penultimate release brings us Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama. The film follows pledges and their male companions steal a trophy from a bowling alley; unbeknownst to them, it contains a devilish imp who makes their lives a living Hell.

And finally, completing August’s new horror releases is the chilling-sounding movie, Tourist Trap. In the film, a group of young friends stranded at a secluded roadside museum are stalked by a masked assailant who uses his telekinetic powers to control the attraction’s mannequins. Sounds great, right? It all adds up to a thrilling edge-of-your-seat rollercoaster ride for August. So, get ready for a nerve-shredding month of horror classics!

NEW ADDITIONS TO SHUDDER’S FILM LIBRARY

Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, we are yet to hear what new treats will be joining Shudder’s ever-expanding catalog of cult classics. However, after May’s premiere of Emilie Blichfeld’s The Ugly Stepsister and Vampire Hunter D, there is plenty to bolster your horror watchlist in August.

THE UGLY STEPSISTER

Our team was lucky enough to catch an early screening of the film, and we loved this dark and twisted take on a classic. Our Lead Editor, Phil Roberts, said: “Emilie Blichfeldt’s The Ugly Stepsister is a shockingly enjoyable, twisted take on the Cinderella story. Pivoting to the ugly stepsister, it takes body horror to a whole new, stomach-churning level. It’s brilliantly original, but uncomfortable to watch. Brutally good fun!”

Our News Editor, Carl Roberts, also had a blast with this one. He said, “The Ugly Stepsister is a dark retelling of the Cinderella story, told from the perspective of a stepsister. With a mix of Labyrinth and The Substance, some stomach-churning scenes, and some unexpected humour, this is a body horror fairy tale, not for the squeamish. Highly recommended.” You can read Carl’s full review of the film here. Don’t miss it!
