Making The New T-Rex in Jurassic World Rebirth: Hatching a New Era Clip

David Vickery, Mark Pascoe, and Gareth Edwards look at making the new Jurassic World: Rebirth T-Rex in this new behind-the-scenes video.

The T-Rex Raft Sequence is one of the most iconic sequences in Jurassic World: Rebirth. Now, a new featurette takes us behind the scenes to learn more about how the ILM team designed the new T-Rex. The iconic dinosaur has been a staple of the Jurassic franchise since its inception in 1993. But for Rebirth, Gareth Edwards and the team at ILM redesigned the Tyrant Lizard King to be more primeval. A throwback to the classic image of the T-Rex before Steven Spielberg changed the face of dinosaur movies forever.

With its enhanced scales, simplistic and rugged look, and its ferocious demeanour, the new Rex, affectionately named Ember, easily won over the fans. Additionally, with its new sound mix by sound designer Tim Neilsen, based on the original recordings for the Jurassic Park T-Rex, the creature made a significant impact. So, take a step back to when dinosaurs ruled the earth and watch the video below.

THE FILM

After a staggering haul at the worldwide box office, it seems fans aren’t ready to abandon the genetically engineered dinosaurs or their mutant cousins just yet. Given the global footfall, Universal Pictures will undoubtedly be fast-tracking a sequel now. So, fans will be hoping to see Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali all return for another round of prehistoric action. To date, the film has taken a whopping $779 million. Considering its modest $180–225 million budget, the film has defied the odds and dominated our summer blockbuster season. Even Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps haven’t been able to match the might of Jurassic World: Rebirth. So, Gareth Edwards’ new addition to the franchise can now be declared the king of the summer box office – and long may it reign.

REVIEW

In our FOUR-STAR movie review, I said, “Jurassic World: Rebirth is absolutely phenomenal. Gareth Edwards has channeled his inner Spielberg to craft a loving tribute to Jurassic Park and Jaws. Although some of the CGI is questionable at times, the film delivers the ultimate Mosasaurus and T. Rex sequences. It takes the franchise back to basics and delivers everything a Jurassic fan could ask for. It’s a Jurassic classic! Alexandre Desplat’s soundtrack brings back the best of John Williams while crafting a new soundscape, and every member of the cast delivers. This is the sequel we’ve been waiting for. The age of dinosaurs is back! Life found a way!

Gareth Edwards’s love of Steven Spielberg’s filmography is well-known, and here he captures the director’s quintessential style to deliver the most legitimate sequel to the landmark original film in decades. Rebirth feels like a natural successor to the original JP trilogy. While it does reference Colin Trevorrow’s trilogy, it intentionally avoids focusing on its characters and storylines, opting instead to return the series to its roots.” Read our full review here.
