Night Always Comes follows Lynette (Vanessa Kirby) through a single night as she tries to secure the money for the house that represents a future for her family. It’s an eventful night as she faces various challenges. She also has to confront her past and her trauma. This is very much a story about how far one is willing to go for their family. And for Lynette, it is an arduous journey. It all goes crescendo for her. Indeed, she is in a desperate situation, so it calls for desperate actions. This keeps complicating her situation. Throughout the film, you can feel Lynette’s despair growing gradually. But she keeps going on this path for her family.

This is a gripping thriller and also a powerful drama that will have you invested in the story and the character. At its heart, it is a character-driven film. It’s all about Lynette. The story explores in depth her life during that one night. From start to finish, you root for her, you want her to succeed. And that’s because the film makes you understand her motivations and her situation. It makes you want to feel for her.

On top of that, as she faces her past, you understand where she is coming from. She is a complex character with so many layers. There’s despair inside of her, but there is also strength. She has to face these challenges by herself. Characters like these are captivating to study. More importantly, this film doesn’t try to be melodramatic; it authentically presents the story, which is why it works so brilliantly.

Moreover, it’s safe to say that it is an excellent Summer for Vanessa Kirby. First, The Fantastic Four, and now Night Always Comes. Both films have her as the lead, allowing her to showcase her full range of talent. With this one, she delivers the best performance of her career after Pieces of a Woman. There is a great supporting cast surrounding her. Randall Park is used to starring in comedies, so this dramatic role is against the flow for him. Still, it works.

But it’s Kirby who carries this film; it all relies on her performance. It’s all about her character. And she delivers a tour-de-force performance. She can make the audience feel all of Lynette’s despair and suffering while also showing her strength to face these challenges. Undoubtedly, it’s a performance that’s worth considering for an Oscar, and I hope she gets a nomination. She truly deserves it.

VERDICT

Night Always Comes is a gripping character-driven thriller that is also a powerful drama about how far one is willing to go for their family. Vanessa Kirby delivers a tour-de-force performance that is Oscar-worthy. It’s a must-watch.
