The Mummy Returns...Again! Are Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz Returning for The Mummy 4?!

Is The Mummy 4 finally happening? Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks to return for another Mummy movie.

Look out, Mummy fans, because Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks to return for The Mummy 4. Although rumors have been swirling about a potential sequel for some time now, nothing concrete has ever emerged from the halls of Universal Pictures. But today, Deadline reports that the film is finally happening. What’s more, the outlet reports that Ready or Not directors Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct from a script by David Coggeshallare.

Franchise veteran Sean Daniel will produce alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment. Sadly, the original writer/director, Stephen Sommers, will not be returning to help steer the film. Nor will Rob Cohen, who directed the third movie, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. But this is exceptional news.

THE FRASER EFFECT

Previously, Fraser and Weisz starred in two Mummy movies together: 1999’s The Mummy and 2001’s The Mummy Returns, which catapulted both to stardom. The 1999 originator featured Fraser as Rick O’Connell, a roguish American adventurer and former soldier in the French Foreign Legion, alongside Weisz as Evelyn Carnahan, an English Egyptologist at the Cairo Museum of Antiquities. By the sequel, the duo were married and had a child, but that didn’t stop Arnold Vosloo’s Imhotep from rising from the grave to exact his revenge. Sadly, Weisz backed out on the third film, but that didn’t stop it from dominating the box office with a $400m haul.

CRUISE CONTROL

The studio turning its attention back to the franchise’s glory days is no real surprise. Universal has tried numerous times to recreate The Mummy magic over the years, with the previous outing starring Tom Cruise both launching and burying the “Universal Dark Universe.” So the studio will bank on nostalgia to relaunch the franchise and potentially pass the torch to a new band of treasure hunters.

Whether or not Radio Silence can capture the same lightning in a bottle that Stephen Sommers did back in 1999 remains to be seen. However, given their success in relaunching the Scream franchise, the future of Universal’s Monster Universe appears to be in safe hands. Plus, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz all but confirmed to return, The Mummy 4 looks set to shoot straight to the top of our most anticipated new releases, and that is a tantalizing prospect.

RELEASE

Sadly, the studio has yet to comment on the news, nor has it addressed any potential release timeframe, so check back regularly for the latest updates as soon as we get them.
