The Academy Award-nominated Japanese filmmaker and animator, Mamoru Hosoda, is returning to UK cinemas with his latest movie, Scarlet. Hosoda has also written the film. Inspired by Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet, the story centres on a princess who traverses time and space. She searches for vengeance after her father’s murder. The film is a powerful, time-bending animated adventure that once again demonstrates Hosoda’s passion, skill, and ability. Check out the official trailer for the film below.
THE PREMISE
Scarlet, a medieval-era, sword-fighting princess on a dangerous quest, seeks to avenge the death of her father. She is the protagonist of this powerful, time-bending animated adventure. After failing in her mission and finding herself fatally injured in a surreal world, she encounters an idealistic young man from our present day. He not only helps her to heal but also shows her the possibility of a future free from bitterness and rage. When confronted once more by her father’s killer, Scarlet faces her most daunting battle. Can she break the cycle of hatred and find meaning in life beyond revenge?
