Brazilian director Gabriel Mascaro’s (The Neon Bull) bold near-future drama THE BLUE TRAIL follows 77-year-old Tereza (Denise Weinberg) as she escapes an ageist authoritarian society. She embarks on a journey through the Amazon to fulfil one last wish. It debuted at the Berlin Film Festival, where it won three awards, including the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize. The film has also screened at the Toronto and BFI London Film Festivals. The release date in the UK and Ireland is set for 17 April.
The film has received some great critical notices, with reviews such as:
‘A movie filled with hope and faith in human resilience at any age’- THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
‘Astonishing…. filled with indelible encounters and images’- VARIETY
‘Breathtaking’ ★★★★★- THE UPCOMING
THE PREMISE
Set in near-future Brazil, where the government prioritises productivity above all else, elderly citizens are forcibly relocated to remote colonies to make way for younger generations. When 77-year-old Tereza reaches the mandated age, she refuses to comply. Choosing freedom over submission, she embarks on a transformative journey through the Amazon – a decision that will change her destiny forever.
Featuring a remarkable performance from stage and television veteran Denise Weinberg, alongside Rodrigo Santoro (Behind the Sun, Love Actually, HBO’s Westworld), THE BLUE TRAIL is a transfixing and life-affirming journey that thoughtfully explores themes of ageism and the displacement of Indigenous communities, while celebrating resistance, resilience, and the search for meaning in later life.

The Blue Trail can be followed when it opens in UK & Irish cinemas on April 17th.
