This summer, an ancient evil rises on digital platforms.

THE MORRIGAN, a supernatural horror-thriller featuring the vengeful spirit of a shapeshifting mythical queen released from an ancient tomb, hits digital platforms in the UK and Ireland on 29th June. The film is released from Thunderbird Releasing.

The film, which premiered at last year’s Galway Film Festival, features a script and direction by Colum Eastwood. In 2020, he earned recognition as one of Screen International UK’s Stars of Tomorrow. The film’s striking pre-credit sequence, set in ancient Pagan Ireland, sets the tone for the fiery, bloody, and chilling mayhem to follow. The movie stars a superb cast, including Saffron Burrows (Baghead, Deep Blue Sea) as the archaeologist who breaks the seal on an ancient tomb. As a result, the movie unleashes something that should have stayed buried. Also starring are Toby Stephens (Severance), James Cosmo (The Hole In The Ground, Braveheart), Emily Flain (Marcella), Art Parkinson (Game of Thrones), and Antonia Campbell-Hughes (Bright Star). Moreover, THE MORRIGAN features a nerve-jangling score by James Everett (Bad Day For The Cut).

THE PREMISE

A successful archaeologist but absentee mother travels to Ireland to excavate a centuries-old tomb. But within the site lurks a danger hidden from mankind for centuries. Once it is unleashed, she must battle to save her rebellious teenage daughter from possession by a vengeful Pagan War Goddess, the Morrigan.

THE MORRIGAN, based on Eastwood’s award-winning short film, is a fantastic addition to the ever-popular folk horror genre, joining the ranks of supernatural Irish chillers The Hole in the Ground directed by Lee Cronin, Corin Hardy’s The Hallow, and Damian McCarthy’s box office hit Hokum, and Eastwood looks set to join those directors as another purveyor of gruesome and unnerving horror.

Boasting superbly atmospheric cinematography shot on location in Northern Ireland and steeped in Celtic folklore, this is essential viewing for fans of supernatural horror. If you enjoyed Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, get ready for Colum Eastwood’s THE MORRIGAN!

The Morrigan will be available on digital platforms on June 29th in the UK and Ireland.
