How Christopher Reeve’s Original Superman Cape Became Part of Milly Alcock’s Supergirl Suit
With just days to go until Supergirl flies into cinemas, the cast is making the rounds on the film’s global promotional tour. Before the cast arrived for the latest stop in London, a remarkable behind-the-scenes detail emerged. This touching nod to Superman’s cinematic legacy is certain to delight longtime DC fans and adds an extra layer of significance to Milly Alcock’s debut as the Girl of Steel.
Speaking to the Raiders of the Lost Podcast, Alcock revealed that the film’s costume designers discovered 16 meters of leftover fabric from the creation of Christopher Reeve’s original Superman costume. Rather than leaving the historic material untouched, they incorporated it into the cape of Alcock’s Supergirl suit.
That’s right—the final remnants of the fabric used to create Christopher Reeve’s iconic Superman costume from the 1978 classic now live on as part of Supergirl’s cape. It’s a fitting tribute to one of the most beloved portrayals of the Man of Steel, forging a tangible connection between Superman’s cinematic legacy and the next generation of DC heroes.

Alcock said: “My cape in this film was remade using material from the original Superman cape. Yeah, I think that they found there was like 16 meters of that material, so yeah, that’s in the back of my cape now.” Watch the full interview below.

This is a wonderful piece of nostalgia. As a lifelong fan of Christopher Reeve’s definitive portrayal of the Man of Steel, learning that the fabric used to create his iconic cape now lives on as part of Milly Alcock’s Supergirl suit is genuinely moving. What’s more, this tribute weaves another tangible thread into the fabric of the DC Universe, creating an instant emotional investment in Craig Gillespie’s new adventure. More than just another superhero costume, Alcock’s suit now carries an added layer of significance, and I can’t wait to cheer her on when she finally takes to the skies.

Whether Supergirl can ultimately match the enduring legacy of Reeve’s Superman remains to be seen. Early signs are certainly encouraging, however. Critics have responded enthusiastically to the film, with some even likening its post-apocalyptic energy to Mad Max—high praise for any superhero blockbuster.
We’ll find out for ourselves when Craig Gillespie’s latest DC adventure arrives in cinemas next week. Backed by a soaring score from Ramin Djawadi and featuring standout performances from Milly Alcock and Jason Momoa, Supergirl looks poised to give the DC Universe a soaring lift. Literally!
Supergirl will release in UK and Irish cinemas on June 25, 2026, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
