August brings a rich mix of new festival favorites, landmark auteurs, and bold cinematic discoveries to MUBI. Carla Simón’s Romería, Hlynur Pálmason’s The Love That Remains, and Lemonholang Mosese’s Ancestral Visions of the Future each take deeply personal journeys through memory, family, and belonging. They blend intimate storytelling with striking artistic vision. Elsewhere, our new Tuning In: Sonic Journeys collection celebrates films shaped by the power of sound. For example, it features Brett Morgen’s dazzling David Bowie portrait Moonage Daydream.
The month also shines a spotlight on master filmmakers with a major Brian De Palma collection. This brings together some of the director’s most celebrated thrillers and suspense classics. Returning in a stunning new 4K restoration is Yorgos Lanthimos’s provocative Dogtooth. Meanwhile, Lawrence Michael Levine’s genre-bending Black Bear offers a gripping exploration of creativity, performance, and desire. Together, these films showcase the breadth of contemporary and classic cinema arriving on MUBI this August.

Carla Simón’s Romería (2025) follows a young woman’s journey to Galicia in search of her family history, where long-buried secrets begin to reshape her understanding of the past. With the same quiet emotional precision that defines Summer 1993 (2017) and Alcarràs (2022), Simón gradually opens her naturalistic drama into something more lyrical, revealing memory, imagination, and filmmaking itself as ways of making sense of loss.

Hlynur Pálmason’s The Love That Remains (2025) is a playful portrait of a family learning to navigate life after separation. MASTER OF SUSPENSE: FILMS BY BRIAN DE PALMA

Newly restored in 4K, Yorgos Lanthimos’s shocking Dogtooth (2009) remains one of the defining films of 21st-century Greek cinema. With its precise visual style and deadpan humor, Dogtooth announced the arrival of one of contemporary cinema’s most distinctive voices.
