TV Review | X-Men '97 Season 2 (Episode 6)

“Episode 6 of X-Men ’97 Season 2 is both action-packed and emotionally charged, as it deals with the aftermath of Episode 4’s shocking cliffhanger.”

It’s Wednesday, so this means it’s time for a new episode of X-Men ’97. Episode 6 is now streaming on Disney +.

THE AFTERMATH OF A TERRIBLE LOSS

Episode 4 shocked audiences when Apocalypse killed Magneto right in front of Professor X, echoing the devastating death of Gambit in the first season. If there’s one thing this series has proven, it’s that it’s not afraid to take big risks. It knows how to surprise its audience and break their hearts. Yes, it’s heartbreaking, but killing off characters in superhero stories—and making those deaths truly meaningful—raises the stakes. It reminds us that, despite their extraordinary powers, these heroes are still vulnerable and can be broken.

Most importantly, these deaths aren’t included merely for shock value. They have real emotional weight and serve a meaningful purpose in the story, shaping both the characters and the narrative. Gambit’s death left a profound impact on both the characters and the audience, and Magneto’s demise is just as devastating. Not only is he one of the series’ central characters, but the fact that he dies in front of Professor X makes the moment even more heartbreaking.

This episode picks up after that terrible loss. It explores how Professor X deals with losing his friend and what it means for the X-Men going forward. Undoubtedly, it’s an emotionally charged episode that acts as a turning point for the season.

BACK TOGETHER

Moreover, after separating the heroes across different timelines, this episode brings Professor X, Jean Grey, Cyclops, and the others back to their own timeline. While it is an emotional chapter, it is also packed with action. Returning to the present doesn’t come without complications, and one of them involves the Danger Room. The episode also heavily features Polaris and Bishop, a duo with an interesting dynamic. It works well during the action sequences. Filled with surprises, this episode is a real doozy.
