This weekend at the UK box office, The Odyssey continues to conquer, while other films largely hold their positions. One new entry joins the list. Read on and see if you can spot the difference in this weekend’s box office.
(1) The Odyssey
Holding steady at number one, The Odyssey brings in £11,887,392 in its second weekend, dropping only 5% from its first weekend. This is a magnificent hold, and it makes the 24% drop Christopher Nolan’s last film, 2023’s Oppenheimer, had look catastrophic by comparison! The Odyssey has resonated strongly with audiences, perhaps unsurprising, given that one of humanity’s oldest stories is being given the blockbuster treatment.
(2) Toy Story 5
At number two again is Toy Story 5 in its sixth weekend of release, pulling in £1,910,095. It’s a 15% increase from the previous weekend, showing the legs the film has. Its total is now approaching 50 million, finishing the weekend at £49,114,251. It’s dominated the family market since its release, taking business away from rivals such as Moana and Minions & Monsters.
(3) Moana
Another non-mover, Moana’s box office leak slows to only 10% from the previous weekend with a £1,370,628 haul.
Though in a weekend where its family film competition – Toy Story 5 and Minions & Monsters – both grew their take, Moana can’t. Its overall total is £8,432,291.
(4) Minions & Monsters
Staying at number four, Minions & Monsters pulls in £1,348,510 for a 15% increase over the previous weekend. Its overall total has now crossed the £10 million mark, coming in at £12,166,982. At this point in its release cycle the previous Minions movie back in 2022, Minions: The Rise of Gru had brought in a total of £28,218,622, and the last film the Minions were seen in, Despicable Me 4 had brought in a total of £30,845,825, both unadjusted for inflation. Minions and Monsters is severely underperforming compared to recent franchise entries, failing to match even half of the overall totals of the two previous films.
(5) Jana Nayagan
It’s not until number five that there is a new film in the ranking, with Indian film Jana Nayagan opening to £449,001 in 182 cinemas. Jana Nayagan follows a fearless former cop who protects his young ward from past trauma while confronting a dangerous, authoritarian supervillain threatening democracy.
(6) The Invite
Keeping the same position, The Invite brings in £303,958 in its fourth weekend, a 27% increase over the previous weekend. Its overall total is £3,065,982.
(7) Obsession
Now in its 11th weekend of release, Obsession spends another weekend in seventh, pulling in £253,372. That’s a 36% increase over the previous weekend, showing the film’s immense staying power.
(8) Evil Dead Burn
Taking a tumble from its number five spot from the previous weekend, Evil Dead Burn lands at number eight with £232,807, for a 23% drop from last weekend. It’s not benefiting from the horror boom that uplifted Backrooms and Obsession; instead, it’s destined to slowly fall.
(9) Disclosure Day
Holding at number nine and the fourth Universal film on the list, Disclosure Day improved its total by 12% over the previous weekend to £78,275. While the latest Steven Spielberg release likely hasn’t done as well as everyone had hoped, it’s still managed to haul in £12,818,013 so far. Universal has consistently had three or four films in the top ten, so despite some underperformance, they have managed to maintain strong holds at the box office.
(10) Supergirl
Supergirl is the third and final film of the weekend to find itself in a new position, and unfortunately it’s a very low one. It only mustered £62,668, a 32% drop from its previous weekend, and its overall total will struggle to reach seven million, with its current total at £5,741,746. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will knock Supergirl out after only five weekends in the top ten.
Next weekend will usher in a brand-new day for the box office with Spider-Man: Brand New Day releasing in cinemas.
