Sad news, Jurassic fans: Gareth Edwards has departed Jurassic World: Rebirth Sequel due to creative differences.
Bad news, Jurassic fans—it looks like the franchise has lost its pack leader. According to Deadline, Jurassic World Rebirth director Gareth Edwards has exited the upcoming sequel following creative differences, bringing his journey with the franchise to an unexpected end. It seems the electric fences couldn’t keep this one contained, leaving the blockbuster searching for a new filmmaker to guide the dinosaurs back onto the big screen.
Thankfully, it’s not all doom and gloom. The report claims Universal has already begun the hunt for Edwards’ replacement, while the filmmaker turns his attention to several original projects currently in development. More importantly, the sequel itself remains very much alive. Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali are all expected to reprise their roles from Jurassic World Rebirth, with franchise veteran David Koepp returning to pen the screenplay after writing the previous installment. If everything stays on course, cameras are expected to start rolling in 2027, meaning fans may not have to wait too long before hearing the familiar thunder of dinosaur footsteps once again.
THE DIRECTORIAL MERRY-GO-ROUND
Of course, swapping directors is nothing new for the Jurassic franchise. Steven Spielberg roared onto the scene with the first two films before handing the keys to the park over to Joe Johnston for Jurassic Park III. Colin Trevorrow ushered in the Jurassic World era and returned to close the original trilogy with Jurassic World: Dominion, while J.A. Bayona kept the dinosaurs loose in the lackluster Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Now, after Gareth Edwards successfully breathed fresh life into the franchise with Jurassic World Rebirth, it’s someone else’s turn to step into the paddock and keep the momentum charging forward.
So, who has the courage—and the cinematic muscle—to wrangle one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster beasts? That’s the million-dollar question. Whoever Universal chooses will inherit a franchise that’s firing on all cylinders, complete with an established cast, a screenplay from franchise veteran David Koepp, and the guiding hands of Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall behind the scenes. It’s the kind of job directors dream about… but one wrong move, and you’ll be dinosaur dinner. No pressure, then!
RELEASE
The Jurassic World Rebirth sequel, starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, is currently expected to roar into production in 2027. Whoever lands the gig will have one colossal task ahead of them, but if Rebirth proved anything, it’s that this franchise still has plenty of bite left.
