With new films, collections, and highlights this September, MUBI presents a fantastic blend of the best of alternative cinema around.
Welcome to the details of new titles and themed collections coming to the MUBI platform throughout September. Philip Barantini’s Boiling Point (2021) and Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird (2017) broadly confront ambition and the emotional strain of human connection under intense pressure. Meanwhile, Carla Simón’s Summer Trilogy – drawing from her own life – tackles memory and the quiet confusion of childhood joys and grief.
MUBI’s Latest & Greatest strand welcomes Pete Ohs’ charming Warsaw-set drama, Erupcja (2025). It also includes Sophy Romvari’s tenderly assembled semi-autobiographical debut Blue Heron (2025). In addition, the visually striking animation Bouchra (2025) explores queerness and familial expectations from Orian Barki and Meriem Bennani.
The Politics and Provocation collection puts legendary auteurs of New Korean Cinema, Bong Joon Ho and Park Chan-wook, in conversation with one another. It celebrates their shared socio-political ideologies and stylistic differences.
BOILING POINT
Set over one frenetic evening in a bustling London restaurant, Philip Barantini’s Boiling Point (2021) follows head chef Andy Jones (Stephen Graham) as mounting pressures both inside and outside the kitchen threaten to derail the restaurant’s busiest night of the year. Shot in a single continuous take, the film plunges us into the relentless rhythms of a professional kitchen, where tensions simmer beneath the surface, and there is little room for anything to go wrong.
Boiling Point (Barantini, 2021) – September 23
LADY BIRD
Set in Sacramento in the early 2000s, Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird (2017) follows Saoirse Ronan as a fiercely independent high school senior navigating friendships, first love, and the uncertain prospect of leaving home. Tender and quietly funny, the film captures the push and pull between a daughter and her mother. In turn, it explores the complicated emotions of growing up and finding your place in the world.

LATEST AND GREATEST: ERUPCJA
Filmed on the streets of Warsaw during Charli XCX’s 2024 Brat tour, Pete Ohs’s Erupcja (2025) follows a young woman who abandons her holiday plans in favor of an old friend and a few intoxicating days of partying and possibility. Notably, it is both a portrait of the city of Warsaw and a wistful look at youth slipping away. The Erupcja captures the fleeting feeling of wanting life to become more than ordinary.

LATEST AND GREATEST: BLUE HERON
Sophy Romvari’s Blue Heron (2025) follows Sasha (Eylul Guven), a young girl trying to adjust to her new home on Vancouver Island as tensions quietly build within her Hungarian immigrant family. What begins as a finely observed portrait of childhood coming-of-age gradually shifts into something far more searching and experimental. As an adult, Sasha returns to these memories as a documentary filmmaker. She does so in an attempt to understand the mental health of the older brother who disrupted the family’s peace and the gaps that time has left behind.

LATEST AND GREATEST: BOUCHRA
Orian Barki and Meriem Bennani’s one-of-a-kind Bouchra (2025) unfolds in a visually inventive world of photorealistic environments and stylized anthropomorphic characters, drawing on furry aesthetics for expressive flair. Following a young Moroccan artist caught between New York and Casablanca, the film warmly explores queerness and familial belonging through the use of Bennani’s own experiences.

The past two decades have seen New Korean Cinema take the world by storm, largely thanks to the efforts of the titanic duo at its helm: Bong Joon Ho and Park Chan-wook. This expansive collection puts the two legendary auteurs in conversation, highlighting both their shared political ideologies and the differences in their provocative styles.
