Cancel those scuba-diving plans, folks, because 20th Century Studios has just dropped a brand-new trailer for Whalefall! The long-awaited survival thriller is finally emerging from the depths on October 16. If this latest look is anything to go by, you might want to rethink those vacation plans. Seriously, this is one underwater adventure you won’t want to take!

The film follows Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams), a young diver exploring California’s Central Coast. He suddenly finds himself caught in a brutal battle between some of nature’s most formidable creatures. After he inadvertently swims into a life-or-death clash between a sperm whale and a giant octopus, Jay is swallowed whole and trapped inside the whale’s stomach. With his oxygen supply rapidly running out and danger lurking in every direction, he’ll have to find a way out before he becomes part of the food chain.

SYNOPSIS
Following the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the central Coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale. While trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons his father imparted may be the key to his escape.

The film, which is directed by Brian Duffield and features a screenplay by Brian Duffield & Daniel Kraus based on the book by Daniel Kraus by the same name, stars Austin Abrams, Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, Emily Rudd. The producers are Brian Grazer, Brian Duffield, Jeb Brody, Allan Mandelbaum, with Doug Merrifield, Richard Abate, Will Rowbotham serving as executive producers.

Daniel Kraus’ novel was a gripping, edge-of-your-seat survival story that delivered on every level, and this big-screen adaptation looks poised to crank up the tension even further. From its breathtaking underwater cinematography and relentless suspense to its emotionally poignant story, Whalefall appears to have all the ingredients of a truly unforgettable thriller.
Whether Brian Duffield can capture the magic of Kraus’ novel remains to be seen. Still, the early signs are seriously encouraging. Based on this first trailer, Whalefall is shaping up to be one of the standout releases of the early winter season. Needless to say, Whalefall is firmly on our watchlist. We cannot wait to dive into the deep and see whether this ambitious survival thriller can deliver the goods on the big screen. Just remember: whatever you do, don’t look inside the whale!
