The 70th BFI London Film Festival is almost upon us. The event begins on 7 October. Among the films showing will be Abinash Bikram-Shah’s Cannes award-winning film, Elephants In The Fog. The festival has revealed the film’s public screening dates. Tickets for the festival and the films involved are now on sale here.
THE PREMISE
In a remote Nepalese village nestled deep in the forest, Pirati (Puspa Thing-Lama) leads a house of Kinnar women, an ancient third-gender community both revered and feared for their believed power to bless or curse. As wild elephants roam the darkness, villagers must conduct nightly patrols to protect their crops and homes. Furthermore, Pirati’s Kinnar family volunteers one member each night. Pirati dreams of escaping with the mustachioed Drum Master she loves. However, this is against the sacred vows of celibacy of her community.
But when one of her daughters disappears during a nightly patrol, and she’s met with cold indifference by the police, Pirati is left with no choice but to investigate the disappearance herself. As the mystery unravels, Pirati stirs up dangerous tensions that threaten to sever the ties she has forged with her family, forcing her to choose between love and her beloved community.
Featuring a mesmerizing performance by Puspa Thing-Lama as Pirati and anchored by sensitive performances from non-actors, Bikram-Shah’s stirring debut explores the Kinnar community’s idea of chosen family and its resilience amid prejudice, danger, and social upheaval.

ABOUT THE FILM
Nepalese director Abinash Bikram-Shah’s powerful and mysterious thriller ELEPHANTS IN THE FOG follows Pirati, a devoted Kinnar matriarch who sets out to uncover the truth after one of her daughters goes missing from a remote Nepali village. This disappearance threatens the community she has devoted her life to and the love she has kept hidden. Debuting at the Cannes Film Festival, the film made history as the first Nepali film in Official Selection. It won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize and Nepal submitted it as its official entry for the Academy Awards. ELEPHANTS IN THE FOG will receive its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on 17 October. This is ahead of its UK and Irish cinema release in early 2027.
