DIGGER

Warner Bros.-Released Friday 2nd October

Synopsis: The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove that he’s humanity’s savior.

Cast: Tom Cruise, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller

Director: Alejandro G. Iñárritu

Cert: 15

We saw the film earlier this week, and are sad to say we didn’t enjoy it that much. I said in my review:

“Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger, despite great performances from Tom Cruise and Riz Ahmed, comes across as a poor man’s Dr. Strangelove, and not a good one at that. To be honest, Iñárritu takes his previous work, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), and almost remakes it. That film deservedly won four Academy Awards. If he’s trying to, or even thinking he will, manage it again with this film, he’s sadly mistaken. His directing is never in question when it comes to style or excellence. It’s his script, alongside Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris Jr., and Nicolás Giacobone, that lets him and the film down. And badly at that. Yes, the unexpected narrative turn is a surprise, but it also alienated almost 90% of the audience I saw it with. That’s never a good sign.”

KNIFE

I’ve seen the film. I can say that it is chilling, informative, and moving. However, if you’re squeamish, the actual footage of the attack on Salman Rushdie is shown, and it is shocking and disturbing. With that said, it is a five-star film that deserves to be seen.

CHILD

Munro Films-Release date: Friday 2nd October

Cert: 15

We’ve seen the film and were creeped out by how it played out. Our editor, Phil Roberts, had this to say in his review:

“Overall, Child is a delightful assault on the conscience. Through Brigitte Urhausen’s brilliantly weighted performance as the desperate mother, we are invited to confront the moral implications of every parent’s worst nightmare. Urhausen brings a raw vulnerability to Anne, making her desperation painfully palpable, while Cyrus Neshvad handles the material with an assured hand. He takes to the horror sandbox like a duck to water, demonstrating an impressive instinct for atmosphere, tension, and dread. On the strength of this film alone, I cannot wait to see where his passion takes him next.”
